[The General]

Please help me with this problem. When my computer boots up and I attempted to go to the start menu my computer will freeze up if I arrow over or click on the the all programs button. Shortly thereafter I recieve an internet explorer error message and it says it needs to shut down and then send/don't send error report. After this is closed I recieve a similar message from Dr Watsons Postmortem Debugger. If click on the send/don't send the computer freezes up. I have to go to CTRL+Alt+Delete then end processes and close Dr Watsons program. I can use all other aspects of the computer without problems. I have run Adaware, spyware CWS shredder and this didn't fix problems. I performed all windows updates, no change. I am not very computer savy. Please help me to correct the problems. First, we need to move HiJackThis to a permanent folder. This ensures backups are saved and accessible. Follow the instructions below:
1.) Go into Windows explorer (located in Start > Programs > Accessories).
2.) Click the (C:) drive to highlight it.
3.) Go up to "File > New" (located at the top left corner of your screen) then click "Folder".
4.) Please name this folder "HJT".

6.) Right click on HiJackThis.exe and go to "cut".

I actually don't see anything indicating Dr. Watson in your log, so I need you to do a couple of things for me.

First, download, install, and run CleanUp!

Next, please run an online virus scan: ActiveScan
Copy the results of the scan and paste them here.

OK,

I ran cleansweep and ActiveScan. You requested that I copy and paste the results of the scan. I am not sure how to do this. When the scan was completed it reported there were no virus' detected, but it did display 2 messages. I don't know how to retrieve these messages or if they are important or not. Do you I just copy and paste the entire window?

In addition you had mentioned that you didn't see any problems with Dr. Watson but before I get that message I get this message that internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to shut down, send/don't send report. Then I get the same message with the Dr Watson program. If I go to CTRL+ALT+Delete and end processes and end the Dr Watson program then the computer becomes unstuck or caught in the loop. However, if I again go to start menu and arrow over all programs the whole process reocurrs.

Ok, General, we're going to get this thing!

Let's try this first and see if we can find the file(s) causing all the problems:

*Download finditnt2000xp.zip
*Unzip the contents of finditnt2000xp.zip to a convenient location.
*Navigate to the Find It NT-2K-XP folder and double-click on find.bat.
*A command prompt will open and it will search your computer for malicious files.
*Once it has finished a Notepad window will pop up with output.txt.
*Copy the entire contents of output.txt into your next post.

ONLY If you receive an error message, when trying to run the above program, saying

...The system file is not suitable for running MS-Dos and Microsoft Windows applications.  Choose 'close' to terminate.

Then, please Follow the instructions below:

To verify whether you have the AUTOEXEC.NT and the CONFIG.NT files, type "C:\Windows\system32" in the address bar of an Explorer window. If there is NO AUTOEXEC.NT or CONFIG.NT file, follow the instructions below:

1. Browse to C:\WINDOWS\repair

2. Right-Click and Copy the AUTOEXEC.NT file

3. Browse to C:\WINDOWS\System32

4. Right-Click inside the window and paste the file.

5. Right-click the AUTOEXEC.NT file that you just pasted, and then click
"Properties".

6. Click to select "Read-Only", and then click OK.

7. Repeat steps 1 through 6 for the CONFIG.NT file

I recieved your posts this AM but didn't have time to perform the recommened items yet. While checking my email I noticed that I had an email from symantec support. I copied and pasted it here. I have run so many programs trying to figure out what my computer probs are that I can't remember if I downloaded any symantec products or ran any of their online scans. Do you know if this is a legitimate email or is it a virus in disguise? Should I delete it or run it. Thus far I have not opened the attached file. I will perform your recommendations when I return home this evening.

Personally, I would just delete that e-mail. I went to the symantec website and it said in order to remove that worm, just update definitions (you can just do live update) then run a system scan. It could be legit, but I wouldn't take the chance.

Ok, here is the log you requested after running the find.bat program. I didn't get the quote you talked about from your previous post about system file not suitable for running MS-DOS..., thus I didn't run the other programs for Windows repair. I think that is what you wanted me to do.

Download the Hoster from here: HERE. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

Please right click HERE and select "save target as". Save it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
