Drawing icons accesses network, is very slow

When drawing the desktop, the icons are drawn one by one, and the network tray icon shows there is network activity. I have no applications running and have no idea what is hitting the network. The task manager shows that Explorer, lsass, and svchost are performing lots of "other i/o".

If I disable the LAN everything runs at normal speed. If I re-enable the LAN and ask to refresh the desktop, it's painfully slow again.

The open file dialog also takes a long time to draw the file info pane and the network is busy while I'm waiting. (browse for desktop picture uses the file open dialog and takes a long time to list the files)

I have dutifully followed your excellent instructions and have cleaned lots of tracking cookies and two trojans from my computer. No viruses were found by any program.

In addition to the programs you list I ran "The Cleaner" which seemed OK. Since then I have removed it.

Any help would be very welcome.
