Ok I am not that smart with computers but I was on the internet and all of a sudden millions of windows started popping up and filling the screen. So I was "[bleep] some kinda virus i'm screwed'. I have some kinda limted anit-virus software (something with windows) but don't think it was updated. Anyway after that the computer would keep rebooting over and over and over even in safe mode or anything I tried. I believe I even tried DOS mode but nothing worked. I would have tried removing the problem and try to save my data but didn't know how and didn't want to bring it to someone to fix. So I re-installed the OS (windows xp and hp software) and it seems to work fine.

I would just like to know if there is probably still a virus or something still on it (what it is), where there are some free programs to help protect my pc. And if there's some kind of easy to use program I can use to recover lost files (mostly pictures) that I lost (if it won't put me at risk). Sorry
for all the demands...any help is HUGELY APPRECIATED. >.>

Read through the manual for this

http://www.pcinspect.../uk/welcome.htm

Look at getting programmes, 1, 6, 7 and 8 from here but deal with the file recovery first

http://www.filehippo...re/antispyware/

Run any or all of these, bookmark them so you can run them whenever

Online Scans

Panda Scan

House Call

If Trend Micro freezes during updating, close then retry

Trend Micro Spyware Scan

Kaspersky Online Scan

Download and run this

Thanks alot for the help! You were very helpful,i'm taking your advice. Also on a side note it was the internet explorer window popping up over and over (about 50 times in a few seconds before I shut the pc off) if that means anything (i'm not sure).

Very unlikely to be a problem after a re-install, for future reference, this should be the first thing you look at running, although you are welcome to run through it now, (after the file recovery)

Please follow the procedures outlined here: Malware Removal Guide

You will need a PC which can connect to the internet

Run all the programmes as advised then post a current Hijack This Log in a new topic in the Malware Forum

For the purpose of accurate malware analysis, Hijack This Logs are only dealt with in the Malware Forum. Posting them anywhere else will result in a delayed response

If you are unable to run any of the programmes, please ask for advice in the Malware Forum
