I was installing a game when the PC just locked up. Ctrl/Alt/Del no response, no mouse movement, nothing.
Hit the reset button, Windows 2000 goes to load then error message.
Unable to load Windows 2000, missing dll files for Kernel required, or similar.

I've booted from CD Rom, go to repair installation, and it asks for an emergency repair disk, which i dont have!
Is there anyway round this? Can i download one from the internet? As i dont really want to reinstall completely, only as a last resort.

Its Windows 2000 Pro OS.

Im using my laptop with XP to post this.

Any help/ideas welcome.

Thanks... :whistling:

I've booted from CD Rom, go to repair installation

is this an actual OS disk or a system recovery disk?

Not sure to be honest.

Its asking for an 'Emergency Repair Disk'

????

The CD rom i have is the Windows 2000 disk.

No, the cd rom is the original installation disk.

The 'Emergency Repair Disk' , when you say yes i have it, looks for a floppy disk in the A: drive.

But hence i don't have / didn't create one, so am stuck !

boot to the cd and choose the R option for recovery console
once at the recovery console type chkdsk /r and let that run to completion

No, still same error.

Got to 100%

i typed EXIT
and it rebooted from Hardrive, but error - Windows 2000 could not start because of an error in the software
Please report the problem as : (blank)

don't get worried yet...still some options...plus...you can always back up your data on another PC before reformatting

found this elsewhere

Problem solved. Used win2k CD to repair but instead of going for repair disk chose option L (no repair disk).
Worked!

do you have an l option or an option to repair without the ERD?

sorry it's been a while since i've tried a repair on 2000 (still looking)

Yeah, i tried the option of 'L' - i dont have an ERD but it comes back with -

Setup cannot find a Windows 2000 installation to repair !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unless you provide the ERD for the installation you want to repair, Setup cannot make the repairs.

It could be because i have a boot manager installed, when i tried running two hardrives 1.Win2k and the others Win98.

Have since removed Win98 h/drive, but unable to remove boot manager software.

I'll run the fixboot cmd now...

Says it has successfully written a new boot sector

and is sitting at C:\WINNT>

Nope.

still same error.

I'm thinking about just reinstalling over the top !

But would rather not....

Its crazy, why cant it just look up the cd rom for the dll files it needs ??? Jeez.
