Limited or No connectivity

A friends computer can't connected the internet through his RJ45 cable. He gets the error saying limited or no connectivity. He was connecting to the internet through a LAN. Then he decided since no one else was using the internet at the time he would connect directly to the modem. Then whgen he switched back to connecting through the LAN he started getting the error. We tried the microsoft patch for the problem caused by SP2 and we tried WinsockXPFix.exe. And neither fixed the problem any other ideas how to fix?

The CAT 5 cable you are (hopfully) using may be dammaged try a new cable,
also you ethernet card (the thing you should be pluging the cable into could be broken and/or have a driver conflict. Try another cable first if that dont work let us know.
