WMP PROBLEM - FILLS SCREEN, WON'T SHUT PROGRAM OFF

I do have an immediate question -A few months ago I had an issue with wmp where any file music or video filled the entire screen, hiding other programs and it was frustrating fiunding ways to close it, often forcing a manual shut down

I was told it was a missing codec. It is happening again.

How do I fix it, by going to a site to download this patch? Please walk me thru
