When I try to open a downloaded video file a message pops up that internet explorer has encounterd a problem and has to close and I don't even have IE open at the time. I send an error report and then it just closes, every time. I can get into the folder itself, but I can't open the file and it's just the video files...any of them. I ran Ad-Aware first , then cwshredder and then ewido spyware and finally, hijackthis and below is the log file that was generated, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi mistacl,

Go to your Control Panel Add/Remove Programs and please uninstall all third party (non Microsoft) codecs listed there and see if that resolves your problem. That issue is often caused by faulty codecs.

Armodeluxe, that's the thing,.. just about all the codecs I got , I believe, are third party codecs. I had to dwnld them in order to watch some of the anime I got. I don't want to remove the wrong things and then be able to open the video folder, but not watch them. I mean as of right now, I can put them on disc to watch on my dvd player, but I can't open it to check it or change the name or anything like that. The videos themselves play just fine on dvd. So what do I need to do? I appreciate the help

What you can do is make a note of all the codecs you are going to uninstall, uninstall them and then reinstall one by one until you find the culprit. Reinstall all others and then search for another equivalent codec for the one causing the problem.
Of course, there is always the possibility that the codecs are not causing the problem.

Try this also and see if that resolves the problem:

Go to Start > Run and copy/paste this into the Run Box:

regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

If this works, you won't be able to thumbnail view the video files, but at least you can click on the files and do whatever..

If it doesn't work, you can reregister the dll with this command into the Run box:

regsvr32 shmedia.dll

Thanks Armodeluxe!! That last suggestion worked perfectly. After I unregisterd "regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll", I can now open,play,edit,etc..to these file. I appreciate it very much
