Hi Guys, I'm baaaaaaaack! You wonderful warriors of the dark side of technology! :tazz: It's not my PC (I've been clean as a whistle!) This time it's hubby's laptop. ;)

Symptoms: Peripherals are not recognized except for the mouse. Internal CD ROM and C drive is recognized but not the external hard drive. Norton Antivirus seems to be on a "delay" on reboot. Unable to delete 16 .tmp files - Norton's says "can't read - unable to open". (Won't delete in safe mode either). It did find "trojan.byteverify" but cannot find what it did with it. Found 9 DSO Exploits and deleted them.

Received an error code windows root\system32\hal.dll was missing or corrupt. Had one heck of a time getting pc to boot off of CD but it finally did. At any given time you may or may not see a folder with or without it's contents. Firefox is default browser and yesterday opened a slew of windows without prompting.

So I am here exposing all in hopes of you waving your majic wands of assistance.
Thanking you in advance since I know what we're in for here! ;)

I've also run the folllowing:
CW Shredder = 0 (see log below)
Adaware SE = 25 Negligible objects
Spybot = 0

Howdy GeekGirl,

I am fairly new here but have a bit of experience in the Infection the PC has!

Lets do this First and then we will get on with a fix!

Run MSCONFIG and enable everything in the startup area. To get to MSCONFIG, click on Start -> Run -> type in MSCONFIG -> click OK.
Make Sure Normal Startup is Checked!!
Select the tab labeled Startup and put a Check by every box there!! Once everything is enabled, run "Hijack This!" and post a new log to this thread!!

Here is a link explaining:
Msconfig

Also,if you will, please post a StartUp log from HijackThis:

Open HijackThis,Select Config(Bottom Right)>>>Select Misc Tools>>> Select Generate StartUpList log and make sure that both Boxes beside it are checked:

Put a check by:
List all minor sections(Full)
and
List Empty Sections(Complete)

It will produce a NotePad Page,I need you to post the entire contents of that page to the next post!

So Far So Good!!

I know the Host Files Needs editing and you can do that with this Program:

Download the Hoster from here
The Hoster
Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK".
Exit Program.

Now,I need you to go back to Msconfig and Under the General tab, make sure Normal Startup has a Green dot by it!'

Now Click the Services tab, scroll down the list and Locate this entry:
Machine Debug Manager
Make sure to remove the CheckMark by that Entry!

You will be prompted to restart for the changes to take effect,do so,Once restarted,a Window will Pop Up,telling you the System Configuration Utility has made changes

Check the box,Dont Show this message again and Click OK!

Lets see a fresh HijackThis Log after all that is complete!

Again, you guys are terriffic.....Cretemonster I do want to thank you for your time. I learned some new tricks from your advice.

Unfortunately, Hubby is now in the process of a full re-install. Nothing that you did by any means, he just doesn't have the patience that I do when it comes to this. (Wish I knew he was going to do this BEFORE I stayed up until 3 am with diagnostics!) Personally I feel to fully restore can be just as time consuming as finding the issues.

I just wanted to get back to you and let you know the results (I know you hate it when you never hear back from people again!)

****************

As a side note - remember in my first post on this thread I said my PC was "squeeky clean"? Well it appears whatever he had was sent to me (we're on a wireless network) I e-mailed the log to my pc since it would not print on his.

So, I downloaded Spyware Doctor which was one of GTG recommended (trial version) which found not only things that I knew came from his PC but an additional 56 creepy things! To think I thought I was clean! The demo doesn't remove it only identifies but thanks to the people here, I am not afraid of the editing the registry, System32, etc. and was able to manually eradicate everything! So NOW I am good to go. :tazz:

Have a great weekend!

Again, this site is just the best!!!

Howdy again GeeKGirl,

Why not scan the PCs with what I call the most Informative Scan I have ever seen!

Download Microworlds Antivirus Toolkit Utility:
MWAV
Once at the site select Download Link 1
Download,Extract all files and Install!
Double-click it to run it, select all local drives, scan all files, press 'scan' and when it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
All I need to see is what is displayed in the lower window,so have eScan produce a log and go through and Copy the Infected entried to a Notepad page and post those results here!
