I have removed almost all of the spyware that was plaguing my laptop, however every time I connect to the internet, I get adds and the anti-spy software (MS Beta 1 & Spybot) indicate that something is trying to redirect. I have renamed all references to msn.com, but hijackhis finds them when I rescan (after the internet connection). I can delete them with HJ but the reappear on next connection.

I am resonably familiar with the registry, so if anyone has a clue as to what is actually doing the redirect, please let me know. I will listen to all suggestions (since I am out of my own).

Thanks

Please do the following:

Please download HijackThis version 1.99.1 from here:
http://www.downloads.../hijackthis.zip
and make sure to unzip it to a permanent folder. Then please run HijackThis, click Scan and Save log, and post the new log here. I would be happy to take a look at it.

As you can see from the file below, I have taken out almost everything not pertaining to anti-spyware or virus protection.
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

The section:
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch

Can be removed by HJ, but it reappears as soon as IE logs on. I have been able to trace most of the other problems through the registry, but something is feeding this redirector and i have been unable to find it.

I did have an earlier problem with Rundll32.exe (virus) so I removed it completely and reinstalled from the WinXP disk.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left. :tazz:

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Everything looks great --- your HijackThis log is completely clean. ;)
Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. Your current versions are outdated. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

IE-SPYAD
A tutorial on using IE-SPYAD to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here

Keeping these programs up-to-date and running them regularly can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.
[OR]
I notice that you do not seem to be running antivirus software. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. AVG makes an excellent free antivirus client; it may be downloaded here. Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. :tazz:

Thank you very much for yor time. Just in passing, I use Ad-Aware, Symantec, HiJack, and Spybot at least evey other day. So it has been a long time since I have had any kind of infection. I am seriuosly considering Mozilla because I am tired of updating Winholes on a weekly basis. Thanks for the advice. and again, thanks for the time!
