Help! HiJackThis won't run! 'Blank' program box.

We've been having a lot of trouble with our pc (slow, cable internet connection drops after remaining idle for a few minutes, a blank 'program' box pops up on the toolbar (with no description) and then disappears. I ran all of the 'pre-requisite' software (antivirus, cwshredder, etc) and tried to run HiJackThis, but it won't run. I tried re-downloading it from the website with the same result (MSVBVM60.DLL is missing). It recommends that you redownload it, but it still does the same thing. PLEASE HELP!
