Internet Explorer Address Bar

Not sure if this is right forum, but here goes.

A friend has a laptop which when you open IE6 the address bar automatically fills with the letter "M", yet if you try typing a letter in notepad for example the letter "M" wont work ???

Anybody any ideas ?

Also when you open the start menu you get 2 adjacent items flashing (highlights one, then other and so on), yet you cannot select either one ?
