D-Link 302G modem hangs

I have a D-Link 302G adsl modem connected by usb cable to ASUS P4S333 mobo, 1.8gb cpu, 256 kb, 80gb hdd. For no apparent reason the modem hangs. If I disconnect power to modem, without first safely removing usb conn, PC will reboot. Any suggestions?

I am probably wrong or will be corrected but the first thing that popped into my head is that the quick change of power to the computer (power usage) could disrupt something.
