Good morning people

Windows Explorer, the app that displays icons, the start menu, all of the forms and windows etc, does not fully execute on my PC, it appears in the task manager, but i have to end the "explorer" process, then reload it for anything to happen.

I had this problem so thought completely reinstalling windows was the right idea, it was due a clean anyway. However after reinstalling windows and my applications the problem has come back :S

Does anyone have any suggestions.

Listed below are the current applications I have installed, along with the startup programs.

Cheers

Please try to be patient; everyone here is a volunteer, and since it's a weekday, I'm sure many of them are at work, which I have to go to soon until late, and then early tomorrow morning through tomorrow afternoon, so please be patient, I won't forget about this thread.

First off, I would try the System File Checker, which scans for corrupt and/or missing files and replaces them with files on the XP CD. It sounds like explorer.exe may be corrupt. To run this, please go to Start | Run and type sfc /scannow. Please notice the space, and you will need your XP CD in your CD drive to run this. When the progress bar goes, please restart your computer. Did it work?

If not, does this happen on other user accounts, or just yours?

If it happens on every account even after sfc, try an XP Repair; there is a link in my signature.

If it only happens in your account even after sfc, your user profile is corrupt and you will need to make a new user account. Please read this for instructions.

Also, since this happened after reinstalling your old programs, do you know which one it was? Or, did you do a registry scan with CCleaner?

Good luck! :whistling:

Try this

http://www.majorgeek...ad.php?det=2048

I have CCleaner and this, run them both weekly, haven't had any trouble.

Knock on wood.

Hope this helps.

If explorer loads partially, but not fully, as in you see it in taskmng but end task it, then run "explorer.exe" again... I suggest perhaps since it is loaded but not fully, you may be experiencing a memory error?

What I mean is, most items on your pc start up at the beginning, perhaps explorer hangs because there are many of these items....

You could try this...

Start>Run> MSCONFIG > STARTUP(SUBMENU) like the picture you showed at top...

Try 1 time, UNCHECKING ALL the items in the STARTUP MSCONFIG field... BUT ONLY THE STARTUP FIELD...
this turns off programs you dont nessasarily need at startup.

Restart and see if it still hangs... if it does still hang then it probably is a memory issue and/or another program conflicting with it issue., if it doesnt hang, then it probably isnt memory or another program messing it.

Thanks for the feedback, it helps next time someone has a similar problem. :whistling:

Programs like CCleaner can cause things like this, but aren't necessarily the culprit. In my previous post, there was a link to transfer settings and files to your new account if you wish.
