Laptop has blank display

My NEC laptop has no display. It shows the battery as fully charged, shows that it is connected to the power supply. When I start it, it makes some noise like it is starting up but I do not get any display or any error messages but no display either.

Configuration is NEC Ready Notebook 200T/300T, 128MB RAM, 12.1" TFT display.

I had not used the laptop for almost a year, so I don't know if something is internally damaged.

Please help... I would like to give the laptop away to charity but need to clean up the hard disk before I do.
