I know nothing about computers and really appreciate your help.

I suspected virus or malware and have tried spy sweeper, adaware, spybot and trend micro housecall. They have all found stuff and removed at some time in the last week or so. This problem started about 3 weeks ago.

The problem is that the machine is running very slowly like the processor is tied up with something else.

For example, I try to open internet explorer or firefox. I takes about 20 seconds compared with about 3 previously. I have defragged the disk and that helped a little but still looking at an hourglass way more than I should be.

Thank you for your help. It is driving me crazy!!

I have two disks and I think I have only defragged the main one, not the back up. I will try to defrag the backup now. Thanks:-)

It is very possible that the computer still contains malware which wasn't cleaned. Please enter the malware forum and carefully follow the preliminary steps. If the problem still persist, post there a HighJackThis log. After they clean your computer, if the problem continues, post back in this forum.
