How i can read .DAT files. Which softwar i need?

Dat files can be a typed document or a image file. I usually open dat files with either notepad or my corel photo paint( or any photo type program). Sometimes dat file are made with Word so notepad opened files will look strange as notepad cannot read imbedded pictures in a doc file.
