Say you've got a Word document in which you've created an embedded file object by selecting Insert, Object, Create from File, Display as Icon.

Is there any way to rename this icon later, without deleting and re-creating it?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Yes, right click on the icon, pick Document Object >, then Convert...

Click the Change Icon... button and change the caption to what you want it to say.
