Greetings,

I `inherited' a Pentium 4 Intel WinXP computer that, although it will recognize a 1/2 GBFujiFilm Flash Drive, will not recognize a 1 GBLexar Jump Drive (JDSP1GB-04-500C).

I have called Lexar several times about this (an email to Support brought no response). Their suggestions were:

1] Go to Device Manager. Uninstall the "Unknown Device", unplug the Jumpdrive and restart the system and plug it back in.
2] Assign a Drive Letter: Go to Control Panel, Disk Management, Assign a new drive letter, find the device and make the assignment

Neither solution worked, followed as I described them here. It did not even show up in"Assign a new drive letter."

The basic info about the computer is (mostly from Everest Home edition):

It was connected through a network. I will reconnect it through a dialup or ADSL light.

The info about the problem and the computer's USB ports and handling of the Lexar and the FujiFilm, as written to Lexar:
=========================================================
Dear Lexar Support,

I have a 1 GB Lexar JumpDrive (JDSP1GB-04-500C). I have recently acquired a Pentium IV, 1.5FHz computer with Windows XP Professional version 2002. I have used the Lexar in every computer (all WIN 2000 or WIN XP) I have come across without a problem. This computer only recognizes it as an "Unknown Device" on a USB port.

The computer has two USB ports.

Device Manager Details:
____________________________________________________________
The computer's Device Manager reports two USB host Controllers:

Device: Intel(rl 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442
using I/O range EF40-EF5F and IRQ 19. No conflicts reported.

Device: Intel(rl 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2444
using I/O Range EF80-EF9F and IRQ 23. No conflicts reported.

They both use the drivers:
Windows\system32\drivers\usbhub.sys version 5.1.2600.1243 (xpsp2.030702-2125)
Windows\system32\drivers\usbport.sys version 5.1.2600.1243 (xpsp2.030702-2125)
Windows\system32\drivers\usbuhci.sys version 5.1.2600.1243 (xpsp2.030702-2125)
Windows\system32\drivers\usbui.dll version 5.1.2600.0 (xpclent.010817-1148)

It reports two USB Root Hubs. Under USB Root Hub Properties...

It reports these drivers:
Windows\system32\drivers\mlnxfltr.sys version 5.1.2600.0 by WinDDK
Windows\system32\drivers\usbd.sys version 5.1.2600.0 (XPXlient.010817-1148)
Windows\system32\drivers\usbhub.sys version 5.1.2600.1243 (xpsp2.030702-2125)

It reports the Lexar as an:
Unknown Device
with Power Required as 0 mA.

It reports (for example) another USB Flash Drive (a Fuji 500 MB) as a:
USB Mass Storage Device
with Power Required as 178mA.

This Fuji is reported as using the driver:
Windows\system32\drivers\USBSTOR.SYS version 5.1.2600.1106 (xpsp1.020828-1920)

Thank you for any insight or help.

I may be way off here, and I'm off to look it up, but surely someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there something about SP2 and USB ports? I can't remember what I'm trying to think of - FENOR??? Where are you?

SS, we beg people for enough info to help them, thank you for providing all the details you could. I don't know what exactly the issue is, but I will ask the staff to take a look because it seems to me the answer is really simple, but for the life of me, I can't remember the reason. Hang tight, help is on the way.

I know I have plugged my 1GB PNY flash drive into computers im fixing that don't have SP2 installed, so that may not be the issue, but could be.......One thing I would like to ask is, do you have the flash drive plugged into a USB port on the front of the computer or in one on the back of the computer? I know that some front USB ports don't give out enough power to properly run the higher sized jump/flash drives. Just a thought.

Hi Fenor,

Thanks for your thoughts. I plugged it into the back of the computer -this PC doesn't have a front USB port.

Actually there is also USB 1.0 and USB 2.0... His computer appears to be old enough to where it may not have the USB 2.0 hardware...

1GB flash drives are relatively new, and probably require USB 2.0 (check your flash drive manual and see if its a requirement)

Sometimes USB ports can become frozen, usually can be unfrozen by uninstalling them in windows, shutting down, remove power, hold down power on button 5 seconds release from the board, then plug back in and go....

Most likely though, YOU dont have USB 2.0

as you said above

USB1 Controller Intel 82801BA ICH2 - USB Controller 1 [B-1]
USB1 Controller Intel 82801BA ICH2 - USB Controller 2 [B-1]

You can buy a firewire/usb card as they come with USB 2.0...

PS: if this link is what you have

http://store.lexar.c...=...-231&bhcp=1

Then it says on that page

Features:

Black rubber protective cap
>>>>>>>>Hi-Speed USB 2.0<<<<<<<<<<
Writable name space on back
Read write protection light blinks until data is safely stored
No drivers required for JumpDrive**
** Windows 98 SE driver available for download from http://www.lexar.com/drivers/

and SS ill provide a few links for the item you need in case you cant figure out what im talking about...
you can also order from these sites, but I recommend local store first ( for better product support ) these are just links to show you what you are looking at getting.

Assuming you have a free PCI slot which you probably do... here is a link for one and if you have access to buy it via the internet, man I would grab this...

its only 10 bucks 15 with shippin and it has some good reviews for working.
if you needed help installing it, write back

lexar has a image recovery software that will also reformat the drive so windows can see it.

http://www.lexar.com...age_rescue.html

You can download the zip file but you may have to pay the $30 for it to work. So far i have not had problems with my pen drives loosing their formatting. You can also try formatting in disk management in windows XP. I have not tried this so i don't know if it works.
