Flash memory stick doesn't work

I have an Attache 512M flash drive. It was working minutes ago. Now when I plug it in the green internal light doesn't blink and in Windows Explorer I don't see the drive listed.

This is so strange. (I believe it's a PNY brand flash)

Windows XP on a new Lenovo laptop.

Yes there are a few photo file.

I tried it on several other CPUs and it just doesn't read it.

Are these things this fragile or commonly defective?

I'm only talking $24.95 here but it's still a nuisance and what if the data were critical?
