DVDs converting to MPEG4

How can I convet DVDs to MPEG4 to watch it on the handheld MPEG4 enabled device? Need recommedations on some good but not too expensive (free wil be great) programs.
Also, once converted, does the full movie fit on a 1 G MINI SD card?

What (brand) handheld device are you going to be transferring the movies to? The best program I've used is ImToo DVD ripper. This transfers to so many different formats, I've been very happy with it. It's not too expensive. Maybe someone else will know about a free program that works well.
