So one night i shutdown my computer and then in the morning i rebooted it and when i did it said instal new hardware....i was going thorugh the wizard and it was for a game controller so i assumed my little brother was working on it earlier or something i dont know....well i went thorugh the wizard and at the end it said it could not complete the installation....and ever since that point when i scroll down a webpag the screen kinda cuts and chops when i scroll down and my computer usage is 100% when this happens...usually it was at 7% when i was on the internet....i can not play battlefield 2 anymore either and i am assuming because my usage is so high.....all programs still work fine my computer is idleing at about 20-35% when it was usually 4% before....i have a laptop with centrino mobile processor and i am wondering if this is a virus(which i think it is) i ran my fully updated norton anti virus and it didnt find anything....do you guys know what is wrong and how i can fix it...

Here is my hijackthis log file....

Hi, Brandon Bredda. :whistling:

Welcome to Geeks to go.

First, Download LSPFix.exe to a convenient location. Do NOT run this program. This is only to be used if you lose Internet Access after removing NewDotNet.

Download new.netfix.exe by noahdfear. Save the file to your desktop.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following:

New.Net Applications or New.Net Domains (anything that says New.Net)

If it is not there, go here and follow Procedure 4: NewDotNet Removal Procedure 4.

Double clickon new.netfix.exe on your desktop, then click Start to extract the contents to it's own folder. Open the folder and double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts and post the contents of the new.net.txt file it creates in the folder in your next reply, along with a fresh Hijackthis log.

In the event that you lose Internet access after removing New.Net, please double-click LSPFix.exe that you downloaded earlier. Check the "I know what I'm doing" button. You will see 2 panels. If there is any file listed in the "Remove" panel on the right-side, leave it as is and just click "Finish>>" then reboot your computer and you should now have access to the Internet. If nothing is listed under the "Remove Panel", do NOT do anything - just close the program. You will need to use another computer to come back here for further instructions on what to do.

Hi, Brandon Bredda . :whistling:

There is nothing in that log that may contribute to this behavior. Lets try some scanning:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly in Safe Mode.

Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

Boot into Safe Mode:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Perform the following steps in safe mode:

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close ewido .
Restart back into Windows normally now.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post a fresh Hijackthis log along with the Ewido and ActiveScan reports.

Hi, Brandon Bredda :whistling:

Are you using Sassafras K2 KeyServer?

Click here to download WinPFind .
  • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
  • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
  • Dont do anything with it yet!
Reboot into Safe Mode

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
  • Double click WinPFind.exe
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
  • Once the Scan is Complete, restart the computer back in Normal Mode.
  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Place those results in the next reply!

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi, Brandon Bredda :whistling:

The steps that I am about to suggest involve modifying the registry. Modifying the registry can be dangerous so we will make a backup of the registry first.
Modification of the registry can be EXTREMELY dangerous if you do not know exactly what you are doing so follow the steps that are listed below EXACTLY. if you cannot preform some of these steps or if you have ANY questions please ask BEFORE proceeding.

Backing Up Your Registry
  • Go Here and download ERUNT
(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
  • Install ERUNT by following the prompts
(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
  • Start ERUNT
(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
  • Choose a location for the backup
(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
  • Press OK
  • Press YES to create the folder.
Registry Modifications

Download the enclosed file: [attachment=10104:attachment]
Extract its contents to the desktop. It is a Registry Entries file, Regfix.reg. Once extracted, double click on it and select Yes when prompted to merge it into the registry.

There is no sign of Malware in your computer that may contribute to this issue. The problem may be due to a driver or excesive startup programs.

Here are some routine maintenance practices that you should do on a regular basis to keep your machine running efficiently. Hopefully going through these steps will solve the problems you are having with the pc being slow:

Disk Cleanup:

http://www.theelderg...nup_utility.htm

Defrag your HD:

http://artsweb.bham....rag-win2kxp.htm

Run chkdsk:

To use Chkdsk, click Start and My Computer. Right-click the hard drive you want to check, and click Properties. Select the Tools tab and click Check Now. Check both boxes. Click Start. You'll get a message that the computer must be rebooted to run a complete check. Click Yes and reboot. Chkdsk will take awhile, so run it when you don't need to use the computer for something else.

Remove unnecessary startups

This should be done through the System Configuration Utility. Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig.
Click OK or hit the Enter key.

Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the check by the items that you have determined are unnecessary. Click "Apply" then "Close"

You will be prompted to restart. Go ahead and restart.

Upon restart you will be confronted with a dialogue box warning about running in selective startup. Just ignore that message and put a check in the box by "Don't show me this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click "OK". You will not be bothered by the message again.

Keep in mind that some entries will be re-enabled in the startups each time you use that particular program. Therefore, you will have to find the option in that programs preferences that says something like "Load with Windows" or "Run when Windows Starts" and disable that option.

Go here for info on msconfig:

Pacs Portal

You can look up the startups at the following links to help determine what is needed and what is not:

ComputerCops
BleepingComputer
Answers That Work
Windows Startup

If that does not resolve the issue, troubleshoot Windows throughout a Clean Boot.

Clean boot is the process of disabling and removing some programs and drivers from the Windows startup process. This is done to identify and troubleshoot issues occurring with Windows XP.

NOTE: Following these steps may result in loss of some functionality temporarily. Restoring the settings may return the original problem.

To perform a clean boot in Windows XP, follow these steps:

1. Log in as an Administrator or a member of the Administrators group.
2. Click Start, select Run, and type MSConfig.exe in the command line.
3. Click OK.
4. Select the General tab and click Selective Startup.
5. Deselect all the checkboxes except Use Original Boot.ini.
6. Click OK and restart the computer.

Upon restart you will be confronted with a dialogue box warning about running in selective startup. Just ignore that message and put a check in the box by "Don't show me this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click "OK". You will not be bothered by the message again.

Hopefully, when you restart the system the problem should be gone. If the issue reoccurs, there must be something wrong with the Windows Installation, and you may need to reinstal or repair the Windows XP installation.

If the issue does not re-appear, then perform the following steps:

1. Click Start, select Run, and type MSConfig.exe in the command line.
2. On the General tab, select the Process SYSTEM.INI File checkbox.
3. Click OK and restart the computer. If the problem reappears, then the issue is with an entry in the System.ini file.
4. If the problem does not reoccurs, then run MSconfig again and select the Process WIN.INI file. Continue with this process until the issue reapears, selecting one of each item such as, Load Startup Items, Load System Services checkboxes.
5. When the issue reappears for any of the selected entries, you will need to edit that particular item.

For example, if the problem reappears after selecting the Win.ini file, click the Win.ini tab in System Configuration Utility as to edit that configuration file. Clear half of the check boxes, ( except for those clearly marked as required) click OK, and then restart your computer. Continue this process until you locate the setting that is causing the issue.

Post back the results with the setting causing the issue, if identified..

No, there is no way to determine that.

Please check your Device Manager for errors:

Start->Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager.

An error should be shown as an exclamation mark over a yellow background.

Please also check the Event Viewer for errors:

Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools-> Event Viewer.

Doubleclick System, If clear, doubleclick Applications.

An error in the event viewer will show as a cross over a red circle.

Let me know your findings.
