The link lead me to choose which label I had on my computer. However, the labels microsoft were labels for "XP'S Proffessional edition".
I searched for labels for "xps Home edition but did not find.

The important part is my computer does have a label of authenthisity. "

I just answered the answers about my label on my comupter and all my answers were "yes". The next section went to questions about XP's CD. Since my XP was already installed I skiped the CD questions.
I have Spybot Search & Destroy, CCleaner,Ad Ware SE, Reg Cleaner, Avast, and I ran Trend Micro but something in my pc stopped the scanning.
Since 2 days ago my pc asks if "I want to continue working off linge or try to connect." Even though my modem is always lit.
In addition my home page has changed to an internet connection error page. And every one of my direct launches are gone. :tazz:

I mae a log in SAFE MODE of HJT.Log. Hpoping you can help get my system back.
Heres is my HJT Log..

Using WindowsSearch, attempt to locate strings.exe on your harddrive. I would expect it to be located in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\ folder, but it may be elsewhere. If you find it, rename it to 'strings.xxx', reboot and see if that had any effect on your redirects.

Run Hijack This and put check marks next to these:

Main,Search Bar = http://store.presari...&c=2c02&lc=0409
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://rd.yahoo.com/...//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://store.presari...&c=2c02&lc=0409
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://rd.yahoo.com/.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,First Home Page = http://store.presari...&c=2c02&lc=0409
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Microsoft

O16 - DPF: {A17E30C4-A9BA-11D4-8673-60DB54C10000} -

Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Reboot and tell me how it's working. :tazz:

Good eveng Cw,

Good news first;
I went into my computer...properties and checked all you listed
Then I searched for the string.exe
I found ONE of a few in path;
"C;\Doc & Settings\All Users\Start Menu "C;\Doc & Settings\All Users\Start Menu" & renamed string.xx
Good news it brought back my taskbar and my Launches :tazz:

Question I also found the exact string in the following paths;
C:\Windows
C:\Windows\Prefetch\STRINGS.EXE-132238E1.pf
C:\Windows\System
C:\Program Files\Antispyware\rkfiles
I lleft these strings only sine you did not instruct me to change every string I found.
After making the string change I suddenly recieved the following error;
Windows
File:strings.xxx
To open this file, Windows needs to know what program created it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically or you can manually
select from a list of programs on your computer.
I was hoping this error would be gone after using HJT but no luck.

I checked every line you said and check "FIX IT" in HJT in Safe mode.

Good news; Im no longer getting the box asking if; "Do Iwant to continue working off line or do I want to try to connect" I have a cable modem which I can see is connected.

I believe in my life the most precious gift to give and recieve is giving of someone's time to someone. I want to truely thank you for yurs. And I hope one day to give back.
Warmly,
Lyn ;)

You are welcome.

Do you continue to receive that error each time you attempt to do something on the computer? Or just that one time.

The exact error says after rebooting;
(Windows
File:strings.xxx
To open this file, Windows needs to know what program created it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically or you can manually
select from a list of programs on your computer).

The other error is;
("Would like to continue working offline or try connecting") happens when first opening up my home page and then after. evenutually it becomes random.

Im forgetting about installing SP2. Instead I need to know if any of the free versions of ZoneAlarm have ALL thier applets ENABLED.

Since I been reading reviews on firewalls Sygate, and I quote, "A freeware version of Sygate firewall OMITS the intrusion
detection system, advanced configuration options, and VPN support."

Is the below line an advrtisment from compaq? If so can it be deleted.?
O23 - Service: Compaq Advisor (Compaq_RBA) - NeoPlanet - C:\Program Files\compaq\Compaq Advisor\bin\compaq-rba.exe

Since there are two identical Explorers, can one be deleted?

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O2 - BHO: IEHlprObjClass - {CE7C3CF0-4B15-11D1-ABED-709549C10000} - C:\Program Files\Kensington\MouseWorks\IE_SPY.DLL (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Do not delete anything unless I tell you to. ;)

I want you to apply all updates to windows, including SP2. I think that will fix your problem.

After the updates are done, we will discuss a firewall. :tazz:

My windows update is still NOT working!
I saw one file the said "Service Pack 1" I downloaded that, but I was guided by microsoft windows Update if I had ALL my updated files to update Internet Explorer.
I feel lik doing a factory reinstallment, if I knew diff it would fix my ISP problem.
Wishing you well

Download and install EasyCleaner:
http://personal.inet...rts/ecleane.htm

After installing it check under Settings > Registry tab if the backup
option is checked and if the directory it points to exists.
This should be true by default, but check anyway.

Then click OK and click Registry
Then click Search. When it is done select all the items per color,
(most, if not all should be green) and click Remove.

Reboot when you are done and let us know how it goes.
