Desktop with old infections I cant quite kill off [RESOLVED] Working hard to get it clean so I can keep it clean

Hello All -
This is my desktop that I have been working on, can't seem to get it quite cleaned up. I'm currently in study and working hard to educate myself to be independant and be able to help others. With 3 computers in my house and 4 kids (4-13 years old) Computer maintenance at my house is a full time job. Finally giving up and getting the help I need to clean this stuff up.

No problem Jag11. I am on vacation until the 25th of August. I will "reclean" and rerun HJT and post a new log for my desktop when I get home. Thanks again for your help, looking forward to working with you.

OK, I'm back and getting back into the swing of things. Here is my new log, this one has been abused by the family for quite awhile. I have worked on it alot over the years and I am fairly certain it has remnants of many various things that I probably only halfway fixed. Thanks for your help. Bill

One other thing I forgot to mention. When the desktop boots up, it displays the following for just a second or so:

Looks like your Boot.INI is damaged or corrupted. Let's try this:

Uninstall Programs
  • Click Start » Run » type: appwiz.cpl » OK
  • Find and remove the following program(s) (if present):

    PartyPoker (If you don't use it)


  • Close Add/Remove Programs window after uninstalling.

Please open HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and then place a checkmark beside each of these entries:

Run an online scan at Panda's ActiveScan
  • Please go here using Internet Explorer.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
  • A new window will open, click the big Check Now button.
    • Enter your Country.
    • Enter your State/Province.
    • Enter your e-mail address and click send.
    • Select either Home User or Company.
    • Click the big Scan Now button.

  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it.
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan.
  • When the download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan.
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
  • Post the Panda report along with a new Hijackthis log.

Sorry for the delay. I was afraid to look for the windows disk because this computer is rather old, we have moved a few times since we upgraded it and I had no idea where to begin looking. Strangely enough the disk was in the first place I looked. Funny how that works.

Looks like the boot.ini situation has been resolved.
I kept the partypoker app
Fixed the HJT log entry
Ran ATF cleaner without a hitch

I cant seem to get the Pandascan to work on this machine. I have run it before on my laptop but it is not working from the desktop. It wont download the files necessary. I tried crossloading the activescan file from my laptop to the desktop, but that didnt work, so i tried deleting the folder from the desktop and that didnt work either.

Hello,

I think the problem is over Panda, because some users are also reporting that it's not working.

Let's try another scanner:

Run an online scan at Kaspersky
  • Please go here to run Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner.
  • You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan, select My Computer.
  • This will scan your system.

  • Now click on the Save as Text button, and save it to your Desktop.

It seems to be running pretty good, im interested in killing some of the processes that are loaded. It still takes a long time to boot, but I'm glad the boot.ini thing was fixed. It was a cause of concern. Hard to believe its clean, its been around forever and my kids are just barely starting to believe that they will not win a free xbox by clicking on the duck. :whistling: Anyway, glad to know it has a clean bill of health. Looking forward to maintaining it, been using Adaware & Spybot for awhile, seems to keep it at bay. Grateful for the new tools and knowledge I have been learning at the site. Now that you're clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

1.) Re-Hide System Files and Folders:
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View tab
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option
  • Click Yes to confirm
  • Click OK
2.) Reset and Re-enable your System Restore

We need to do this to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Click Start » Run » ( type: SYSDM.CPL ) » OK
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check - Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply.
  • Uncheck - Turn off System Restore.
  • Click OK.
You have now flushed your previous System Restore points, so we will make a new one again since your computer is already clean.
  • Go to Start » All Programs » Accessories » System Tools, and select System Restore
  • In the System Restore prompt, select: Create a restore point
  • Click Next
  • Give a description to the new Restore Point. (Something like: Clean PC)
  • Click Create
  • Then close the window
3.) How to Prevent Re-Infection

Please take your time reading on this list, it is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Windows Updates (a must!) - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this, open Internet Explorer, then and select Tools » Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • Firewall (a must!) - It is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Kerio and ZoneAlarm.
  • Anti-Virus (a must!) - It is also a must have. Two good programs are Avast and AVG, they're both free.
    Note: You must only use 1 (one) AV because if you have 2 AVs, it will conflict with each other and will only make your system slow.

Thanks Jag11, I really appreciate your help! You guys are awesome!!
I also really like your closing/prevention speech. I would like to borrow the code, although I might recommend including only one firewall, antimalware in the note as well. :whistling: I'm doing PL#5 and I'm hoping not too many users are really that protected!! :blink:
