New Artec External CD-R/DVD Combo Drive (52X) failing to read blank me

My ARTEC External CD Burner DVD Combo Drive CD-RW 52x is brand new, it's burned maybe 10 CDs since I got it, and now, it doesn't want to read any blank media, it just keeps spitting it back out and asking for a CD. At the same time my HP DVD Writer 300n stopped working, so that leaves me completely without burning capabilities, unfortunately, I can't afford right now to just go out and buy MORE hardware.

Are there are known reasons for my new combo drive to start doing this and are there are fixes? If so, I would appreciate the help, thanks.
