Problem starting Acer Laptop

I am helping a friend sort his laptop out. Its an Acer TravelMate 242

Anyways, its about 2 yr old. Today he showed it to me, he plugged the AC Adatper in and turned it on and it just sits there with a black screen doing absolutely nothing. So i have a look. I disconnect the adapter and turn the laptop on to see if it runs on its Battery pack which it booted up with no problems into Windows XP. I reconnect the Adapter and the Battery Charge Light turns on( after a little while it goes off). Then i turned the laptop on and the Power Light comes on and it makes this noise (sounds like a fan) which just stays on while sitting on the blank screen.
I then attempt to start the laptop up again on its Battery Pack but it won't startup and does exactly the same thing as before.

I'm stuck as what to do next.
