MISSING DLL FILE WITHOUT XP DISK!

i have an hp pavilion 700...very nice computer...xp and all...but now it has issues...it starts up and tells me the file is corrupted or missing and the file is root>\system32\hal.dll. and i cant burn it to a cd to get it on that computer and it didnt come with an xp disk...it was built in to the motehrboard...waht can i do?

start here

if you do not have a windows disk, you will need to run an in place recovery disk

This will allow two different recovery methods...use the recovery but leave my data intact method first.

Just to amplify, many big box PCs have a hidden partition that includes all the software needed to restore your PC. More modern ones give you the option of an inplace repair or a complete system wipe with fresh install. You should always try the first choice, and hopefully you can at least get your data.
