Hello,
My computer has the Desktop.exe file in C:\WINDOWS\isrvs. I have tried all of the approaches listed on this site before posting with no luck. Below is my HJT log. My home page is being re-routed to res://shdocpe.dll/blank.htm, I get popups and the little desktop search hides in the lower right under my toolbar.

:tazz: Thank you for the reply.

I followed your instructions and everything seemed to work. The desktop search did not come up when I loaded windows this time. My internet Explorer has 3 seemingly new icons listed to the right of the print icon.. they are edit, discuss, and ebates. Also my desktop has a file on it called desktop.ini and thumbs.dp

Here are the results from the two scans and the HJT log

Hi idiotech

Welcome to geekstogo!

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out). The following items are malware and must be fixed

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Desktop Search] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EbatesMoeMoneyMaker0] "C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\EbatesMoeMoneyMaker0.exe"
O9 - Extra button: Ebates - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm (HKCU)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure all are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\EbatesMoeMoneyMaker0.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
Let the system reboot.
C:\WINDOWS\blocklist.reg
C:\WINDOWS\ceres.dll
C:\WINDOWS\delprot.ini
C:\WINDOWS\INF\dlmax.inf
C:\WINDOWS\INF\farmmext.inf
C:\WINDOWS\inst\3p_1n.exe

C:\WINDOWS\webdlg32.inf
C:\WINDOWS\winsx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\winsx.inf
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe

End off killbox files.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Thank you,
Here is the new HJT report. The deskdop.exe is still showing up on the report but it isn't coming up on my computer or in the folder Windows\isrvs however the files still left in that folder are "edmond.exe" "isearch.xpi" and "msdbhk.dll" also a subfolder called "icons"

Hi idiotech

Welcome to geekstogo

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out). The following items are malware and must be fixed

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Desktop Search] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

[*]Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
Let the system reboot.
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe

End off killbox files

The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

When i went to the Microsoft link to download the Service Pack 1a for Windows XP I only see the express installlation option (other than the cd option below) and when I select this I get the "Windows XP service pack 2". Is this the correct download?

Thank you again for all of your help with this.

Hi idiotech

In reply to your question Yes

But before you UPDATE we will need to make sure your system is clean.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp

Please post the logs From both virus scans and HJT.log we will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

The results from the housecall scan said total scanned 59338, infected files 0

below are the results from the active scan and the HJT log. In following the last set of steps---when I was in safemode and listed the two files to delete in killbox a window came up after I selected the Yes reboot now and it said "Pending File Rename Operations Registry Data has been removed by External Process!" and had an OK button.

Thank you

The 4 files were not located in Task Manager and the file qhbmxgvz.exe was not listed in C:\windows\system32. I did list everything in the kilbox and deleted upon reboot. Should I download the Windows update now?

Below are the results from the scans and the HJT log

Hi idiotech

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Download the ccleaner unzip the file
I use this Program and is setup with all boxs are check. Click on auto-startup
Now run the program

Reboot into Safe Mode: Click here if you don't know how to do this.

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure all are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Clean out all temp files in Mozilla, Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer: Tools/ Internet Options/ General/ Temporary internet files/ Delete Files (NOTE, that this may take very long!). You can also set the memory limit to about 80 MB at the Settings.

Mozilla: Edit/ Options/ Extended/ Cache/ Clear Cache

Using windows explorer delete the following file
C:\My Downloads\backups\backup-20050319-202148-448.dll

Run killboxand click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot.
Paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
Let the system reboot.
C:\WINDOWS\ceres.dll
C:\WINDOWS\delprot.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\unic2_32.dll

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm

Please post the logs From panda virus scans and HJT.log we will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.
