Slow CPU

I've noticed that my system has been slower this summer. I enjoy playing Civilization IV, and there's a lag now when I play. I semi-regularly run ewido, ad-aware, and atf-cleaner.

When you get a chance, would you look over my HijackThis log?

Hi, and welcome to Geeks to Go. I apologize for the wait - the forums have been extremely busy.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmfhotfix.dll

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report
Please post a new hijackthis log along with the activescan report.

I did what you said. The Panda Scan says, "no viruses or malicious software were found."

Here's the new HijackThis report. If there's anything in there slowing the system down which you think I could delete, please let me know. Thanks.

I'm sorry - I've been really bogged down lately and lost track of your thread. :whistling: I will be on more tomorrow, and will review it then. It looks like you're clean, but you just want to remove unnecessary items in order to improve performance, correct?

That's OK. It wasn't an emergency. Yes, exactly, I'm just looking to improve performance as you say.

Sometimes when I start up my computer, all I see is the wallpaper and not the taskbar or icons. I have to shut down the computer manually and restart it when this happens. I wonder if this (in addition to the slow performance thing) could be symptomatic of anything.

That doesn't sound normal, booting and getting no icons or anything. Let me do some research and see if I can find anyone else who's had a problem like that. I'll also take a look at what we could take out of startup in order to reduce your running programs and startup programs.

Let's start with items that can be removed from your startup. These are items that can be started manually, and they can be removed through hijackthis or msconfig - it doesn't delete them from your computer, just stops them from starting up so you have fewer unnecesarry running processes.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EZEJMNAP] C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\EzEjMnAp.Exe - For IBM Thinkpad Notebooks. Quote: "The IBM ThinkPad EasyEject Utility makes removing multiple devices from your computer faster and easier by enabling you to stop more than one device at once, rather than stopping each device individually". Available via Start -> Programs

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATIPTA] C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe - Control panel for the ATI series of video cards allowing access to such features as display resolution, colour depth, etc. Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Display. Some users may need it if they have optimised their settings

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UC_Start] C:\Program Files\IBM\Updater\\ucstartup.exe - Auto updater feature for IBM machines that tries to connect to IBM to see if there are any new drivers, patches and etc

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ibmmessages] C:\Program Files\IBM\Messages By IBM\\ibmmessages.exe - Allows IBM to push messages onto users' computers. Quote: "The Access IBM Message Center can display messages to inform you about software and solutions available from IBM as well as messages from IBM eSupport"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime - System Tray access to Apple's "Quick Time" viewer from version 5 onwards

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe - Checks with Sun's Java updates site to see if newer Java versions are available. Visit http://java.sun.com or just run the Java Plug-In Control Panel

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background - Windows Messenger utility. If you don't use Windows Messenger, this can be annoying. Available via Start -> Programs. Go to Windows Messenger > Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts"

The following recommendations are also what we typically suggest to users who are experiencing slowness - note the instructions for disabling startup items in msconfig, if you want to disable any of the above items:

Here are some routine maintenance practices that you should do on a regular basis to keep your machine running efficiently:

Disk Cleanup:

Run chkdsk:

To use Chkdsk, click Start and My Computer. Right-click the hard drive you want to check, and click Properties. Select the Tools tab and click Check Now. Check both boxes. Click Start. You'll get a message that the computer must be rebooted to run a complete check. Click Yes and reboot. Chkdsk will take awhile, so run it when you don't need to use the computer for something else.

Remove unnecessary startups

This should be done through the System Configuration Utility. Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig.
Click OK or hit the Enter key.

Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the check by the items that you have determined are unnecessary. Click "Apply" then "Close"

You will be prompted to restart. Go ahead and restart.

Upon restart you will be confronted with a dialogue box warning about running in selective startup. Just ignore that message and put a check in the box by "Don't show me this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click "OK". You will not be bothered by the message again.

Keep in mind that some entries will be re-enabled in the startups each time you use that particular program. Therefore, you will have to find the option in that programs preferences that says something like "Load with Windows" or "Run when Windows Starts" and disable that option.
