I have acquired some virus/ malware that is causing my computer to restart when a spyware/ virus program is run when in the normal windows XP mode. Many of my destop icons have disappeared and my background has become a red spyware warning screen with a link to buy some program. When the computer restarts a blue screen flash very briefly before restarting the computer. After managing to take a picture of the blue screen on my phone before it dissappeared I found that it is citing vdnt32.sys as the problem. None of the spyware programs used in the safe mode will take care of this problem. Here is a HiJackThis log of my computer.

here we go, I have downloaded a crapload of spyware programs to check for viruses. I no longer see the vdnt32.sys file in the System32 folder and have restarted the computer in the normal mode. The computer still pops up with a red background that says Danger: Spyware blah blah blah. If you right click the start menu and click on explore, a blue screen will pop up and the system will restart. It flashes only briefly so I couldnt tell ya what it says. I have run Hijackthis again and here's the log.

Hi robertch

Welcome to geekstogo!

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out). The following items are malware and must be fixed

HijackThis is being run from a temporary folder; this means that any backups it creates as a result of fixes made with it will be lost. Please create a new folder C:\HJT and place the program into that new folder C:\HJT.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

I have followed all the steps you have given except checking the IP address (not sure where to do that). Some problems seem to be fixed or less severe but the background of my comp is still the red danger: spyware alert. Operating in normal mode i no longer am getting shutdown, so I take this as a small inprovement. Here is a new HJT log that I have taken in normal mode of XP.

Let me know if you need a newer scan when you get this. I'll switch my computer to safe mode cause there are still problems and i assume that will be the best chance of preventing further infections. If you need a scan from in the safe mode let me know.

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

[*]Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry to a folder on your system as a backup. While in the Registry Editor, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\ and delete draw32

Next go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\ and delete draw32\DLLName

Close the Registry Editor now.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
C:\WINDOWS\Rao.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Sun.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Vts.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Hnj.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Kah.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\draw32.dll

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
Let the system reboot.
C:\WINDOWS\Rao.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Sun.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Vts.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Hnj.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Kah.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\draw32.dll

End off killbox files

Reboot as normal

This is important:
Please run the following free, online virus scans.

http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp

Please post the logs From both virus scans and HJT.log we will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

I followed the steps fully this time. Looking in the registry ...CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify, Draw32 did not show up. The only item in that folder was a file named (Default) with an AB file symbol along with serveral other folders. I have run the Panda Scan and heres the log.

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot.
Paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

Hi robertch

You will need to search in your registery to remove this ExactSearch its just a dead link no threat.

Download the ccleaner
I use this Program and is setup like this all boxs are check. Then chose Auto start.
Now run the ccleaner

Clean out all temp files in Mozilla, Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer: Tools/ Internet Options/ General/ Temporary internet files/ Delete Files (NOTE, that this may take very long!). You can also set the memory limit to about 80 MB at the Settings.

Mozilla: Edit/ Options/ Extended/ Cache/ Clear Cache

Turn of system restore
Disabling or enabling Windows XP System Restore

Defrag your hard drive turn system restore back on and create a new restore point.

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN :tazz:

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use). Click Here
QUOTE
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox user posted image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. ;)

Kc ;)

You cannot right click on the wallpaper. Before I read your reply I was looking at the display settings and saw a file named desktop was set as the background and could not be changed. I searched desktop and found a desktop.html file that was recently modified and deleted it. The desktop display dissappeared and is now a blank white screen, however it still cannot be changed (at least not in safe mode if that matters). I'll reboot in normal mode and see what happens. Thanks for all the help.

I am mostly set but there are some weird things going on with my computer. I cannot change my background and i cannot right click on most items that I should be able to such as the recycle bin to empty the trash. Any ideas?

Hi robertch

Copy & paste the text in bold below into notepad and save it as recyclerem.bat
(Set filetype to "All Files")

attrib -r -s -h %systemdrive%\Recycler
del %systemdrive%\Recycler
attrib -r -s -h %systemdrive%\Recycled
del %systemdrive%\Recycled
shutdown /r /t 0 /f

Close all programs and doubleclick recyclerem.bat

Your computer will reboot and you will have a shiny new (empty) recycle bin.
Please check what other problem you have and post a list

I can empty the recylce bin by opening it all the way up what is strange is that I cannot right click it in the desktop to do so. I also cannot right click the wallpaper to get to the display menu, and in general just cannot right click many other items. I also cannot change the background from just the blank grey as it wont let me select an image in the desktop tab of the display menu.
