I am also starting to experience a random blue screen similar to the Windows error warning screen that comes up. It also says I have spyware on my PC and to look up alternatives to protect my computer.


Well the computer is becoming more and more protected as the day has gone on. As I stated before I have run through all the programs mentioned: Adaware, Spybot, etc.

I would love some help because I obviously can't help myself. I have spent half the day going through possible solutions.

I'm not bumping this for attention, I swear.

If I click on the triangular exclamation it gives me a list of supposed spyware removal programs. There is a link "Uninstall" at the bottom that leads to this text:

If you have problems with this site follow the next steps:

1. Download and run the clean program here
2. Reboot your PC
4. Install good antivirus soft and spyware remover.

If the clean utility could not help try these step-by-step instructions to manually remove ads from your PC:

1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Open Display Properties.
3. Click the Desktop tab.
4. Click the Customize Desktop button.
5. Click the Web tab in the Desktop Items window.
6. Make sure all checkboxes in this window are un-checked.

Then delete the following files if they are still on your system:

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Go to Geeks to Go
. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window. (make sure you have signed in first)
. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. A cursory analysis of your log indicates that you aren't in too much trouble.

4, Usually I wait for the log to be clean before using this fix, but try this now to get rid of the Black Screen Warning:

Click "Start", "Settings", and then click "Control Panel". Open the "Display" applet.
Click on "Desktop", "Customise Display..." and "Web".
In the box under "Web pages" look for a checkbox named "Security". If found select it and click "Delete".

5. Please run a new HijackThis with all windows closed except for HJT, SCAN and Produce a log to Post into this thread

I was just Pm'd by the man who provided the fix and he now also recommends that we kill all our netscape home page, search page settings. It seems to become more stable. Sorry for the inconvenience but you can get them back easily.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.


Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them (if they are present):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\srvc32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally,RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

I went through the steps mentioned. The triangular exclamation is at the tool bar and the "Danger!" screen was there on reboot.

I didn't see the .exe files in Explorer while in Safe Mode.

TrojanHunter found three possible trojans. Two of them are the spoolsrv.exe and the srvc32.exe. I don't see anything on the removal of these. I am hesitant to proceed and these get ignored by TrojanHunter upon exiting the program. One I am sure how to have TH handle the possible trojans, I will continue per your post and then copy the log file.


Also, I did go through all of the steps you had including the checking of the Netscape lines in HJT to be fixed. If there is something else I needed to do to disable Netscape, I didn't know. Even if I need to just delete anything to do with it. I never use Netscape, only Mozilla (IE where necessary).

You are doing well. Let Trojan Hunter remove BOTH of these items as the spool thingee is a virus and the other is a trojan (not spelled like the real one).

The Netscape question: Firefox and Mozilla are sort of built like Netscape and use some of their features. Same thing as far as we are concerned.

Do the Trojan and repost your log. It is going as planned.

I finished with TH and Kasperspy. I think that TH identified the problems but did not remove them. I didn't see an option in the program to do that. Kasperspy identified them and removed them, along with some other viruses and trojans (around 25 in all removed).


After reboot, no problems other than a window telling me that spoolsrv.exe and then srvc32.exe could not be found and to re-check the path. No real problem. It will probably come up whenever I reboot, but that is a lot better than the problems from before.


As of now, there is no hijacking of my desktop and the triangular exclamation is not at the toolbar. Oh, and I also have a ton of virus/trojan-checking software on my PC now

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Another cleanup that will help is to go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

3. Make sure that all are gone, by checking the folders that the Temporary Internet Files and Temp files are stored in. To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties). Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box, then 'Clear History' and then press OK (or go direct to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temp\ folder) and
C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\)

4. Empty your Recycle Bin

5. Double Check the following folders to make sure they are empty:
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\your account\Temporary Internet Files
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp\ folder (or go direct to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temp\ folder) and C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\)

6. You may find that you have to repeat the steps a couple of times.

7.Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.


Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
