High Def TV ?

I have a flat screen Panasonic 29" TV which is almost 5 years old. I recently got the xbox 360 & connected it to the component ports at the back, however the screen did not quite load. A bunch of hazy lines appeared, nothing else so I switched to the A/V cable. I've tried all three high definiton settings but all give same result. What does this mean ? Does my TV support high definiton or not, what exactly are the component ports for ? If it does not support high definition is there any way of making it high definition capable ?
I'm not exactly sure where this kind of problem would go so I took my chance in Hardware, components etc.
Thanks in advance for any help.
