Hmm...I tried to fix the blue boxes around my desktop icons, and all I accomplished is that now 2/3 of my desktop is blank. The left-hand side strip still has the wallpaper, and the toolbar is intact. The computer still works though.

How do I fix this please?

LOL fastest way, System Restore. Congrats, you are not the first person goofing off and then broke it!! I do it all the time...("what could it hurt to ~~click~~ aarrgghhh!!")
Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Restore to the day before you did this. Cheer up, I've learned a zillion things freaking tweaking.
