Hi folks,

You helped me out once before and I am hoping you can help me this time. One of the programs I use to clean up (I think it was Ewido) picked up this "Smitfraud-C" malware no other program detected - but then indicated it cannot remove the 25 (!) instances it has found of the malware.

In addition, my IE 6.0 keeps crashing on a regular basis, as did my Yahoo bowser today, especially when first logging in to GTG.

Finally, my system (windows XP Home Ed) has been unstable in recent weeks, coming up with the blue "Dumping Physical Memory" page about 3-4 times a week.

Please let me know if you can see anything in the HJT log/registry that might be a problem - thanks for your help and here's the HJT log:

Chances are if it's not in the folder with the rest of the files, that it was either deleted by your antivirus or one of your anti-malware programs while you were extracting the files. Try disabling the McAfee.com McShield and try downloading and extracting the files again and see if it works this time.

Still does not work - plus when I re-engaged the McAfee Antivirus it immediately popped up with a "Blocked Attempt" - which I think did have "smit" in its name.

Yes, the SmitFraudFix needs to be extracted into a folder in order to work correctly. Let's try running this in Safe Mode, we might not have so many obstacles there.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Disable the McAfee.com McShield again, then download the file SmitFraudFix.zip again. This time reboot into safe mode and try extracting and running it there.

Boot into Safe Mode:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Then reboot into normal windows and post the required log.

Jeez - this is excruciating... It still did not work and I got frozen out in Safe Mode as well once. Still has the same "process.exe file missing" message.

Maybe I should turn off SpySweeper also before I download SmitFraudFix?

Hi RiP - Ok, so the problem was not the shields, it was my zip program which did not properly unzip all files - useful for future reference maybe. I also have been getting kicked off G2G with IE errors and even a total system shutdown once. Not sure what's going on.

To recap: I seem to have a Smitfraud-C malware that I am not sure how to resolve. At the same time, I have significant system and IE instability with frequent full automatic shutdowns. I was asked to post a HJT log again after we tried some things a couple of weeks ago. Any thoughts on what the issue might be?

I should note that there are 2 users set up on this computer - not sure if that makes a difference - and that Webroot Spy Sweeper has started acting up a little of late (showing 4 of 4 critical shields not active when their individual tabs say they are active).

I was asked to post a HJT log again after we tried some things a couple of weeks ago. Any thoughts on what the issue might be?

I tried having you run a smitfraud detect/remove program but it didn't find anything, so we'll try something else since you clearly do have a smitfraud infection.

Download smitRem.exe ©noahdfear, and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop (in Internet Explorer, right click on Panda ActiveScan link select "Copy Shortcut" then right click on your desktop and select "Paste Shortcut" or in FireFox right-click the link and select "Save Link As" and save it to your desktop).

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.

• Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
• A new window will open...click the Check Now button.
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
• If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
• It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
• When the download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
• When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Somehow I totally missed your reply until now - thanks for posting it.

I ran all the scans in SafeMode (except for Panda ActiveScan) and everything worked except for the smitRem disk cleanup, which just got stuck on "calculating how much disk space..etc" for an hour or more without any hard disk activity. It did provide me with the log, which I attach here.
