My internet recently stopped working with Internet Explorer(though it works with firefox) and kept redirecting me to the same page, shown here-

I noticed an item which kept on redirecting my connection so it went though a proxy "213.194.110.199:8080" , i removed this entry but the next time i connected to the internet it reinstalled itself.

I ran Ad-Aware, Ewido, Spybot and Trend Micro PC-cillin and found nothing major, just cookies.

I appreciate any help you can give, Abz.

p.s. updated spy sweeper from v4.5 to v5 after last log.

Still same problem as before, i can run firefox but can't update windows as internet explorer doesn't work.

Hi silent_scorpion,

Welcome to GeeksToGo Forums and thanks again for your patience.

1. Go to Start, click Run and copy/paste the text in the quotebox in the Open box, then click Ok.

regedit /e C:\bufile.reg "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings"

2. Open Notepad and copy and paste the following text in the quotebox into it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"ProxyServer"=-

Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files". Then please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.

3. We need to disable some of your Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

> SpySweeper:

Open it, click > Options over to the left then > Program Options > Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".

> Windows Defender:

Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

You may re-enable them again when your computer is clean; I will let you know!

4. Run HIjackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entry:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 213.194.110.199:8080

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

5. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log for review and let me know how things are running now.

well i did all you asked and i ran hijack this, which didn't show the proxy changing entry, but when i tried to connect through internet explorer i got directed to the same page i did right in the start. so i still got the same problem i started off with, here's the hijack this log AFTER i tried to connect to the internet with internet explorer......still no luck :whistling:

Hi silent_scorpion,

1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network/internet connection > internet options > connections > LAN settings > Uncheck the box next to Use a proxy server for your LAN then click Okay (twice).

2. Please disable SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean; I will let you know.

Open it, click > Options over to the left then > Program Options > Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".

3. Reboot and as the computer starts up, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times and then choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear.

4. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark this entry:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 213.194.110.199:8080

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis ancd click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

Reboot to go back into Normal Mode and post a fresh HijackThis log for review!

edit- the entry still remains but i got internet explorer to work, something must have changed my settings under internet properties>connections>settings, so i changed them back to the defaults and it seems to be holding....for now, thanks for your help anyway Falu.

Reboot into safe mode and try to delete the R1-entry as instructed before. Let me know if that worked.

By the way could you be more specific about which specific settings were changed and which you changed back to default!

okay, here's how i changed the settings:
right click on internet explore- select properties.
then i went to connections and clicked on settings. for some reason the connection was going through a proxy (possibly left over from some spyware i removed), i just unticked the box so it didn't use a proxy and now internet explorer is working.

Good to hear everything is okay now.

1. Check if the R1-entry is still in your log. If it is delete it in safe mode according to the instructions previously given.

2. Remove previous restore points and set a new one to purge any malware that may have been backed up:

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

3. You may re-enable your realtime protection again:

> Spysweeper: Open it, click > Options over to the left then > Program Options > Check "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and check all there.
Check "home page shield" and "automatically restore default without notification".

> Windows Defender: Open it, click on Tools > General Settings.
Scroll down and check Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you check this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

4. In order to prevent future infections follow these recommendations:

a. Visit Windows Update on a regular basis to stay current with critical updates.

b. Use a Firewall. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. There are several good but for free programmes available like:

Sygate
Kerio
Zone alarm

c. Install and run the following free programs:

* Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here!

* Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found
here! Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

* SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here!

* SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here!

* IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Keep all these programs (including your anti-virus) up-to-date and run them regularly.
If you do not update regularly they will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
