I was referred here because you guys apparently know your stuff when it comes to these nasty things! I have the following software loaded on the machine. McAfee Enterprise, Edwido, Spybot, Adware. I have been unable to clean with any of these so I will post both my logs. One will be from Hijack this, one will be from SmitFraud in regular mode (scan), and then I will run another one under safe mode where I will clean the registry. I will post each of these separately. I really appreciate any insight into either one of these.

PS - In the Hijack file it looks like there are some dll files missing. I don't have a CD so you may tell me I need to reload the whole system. I think McAfee or one of the other programs may have deleted some files that prohibit the system from accessing the web because of IP issues. This may be because of those deleted files.

Got this log from SmitFraud before rebooting into Safe Mode like you mention to do in other posts. Will follow those instructions and post an update. Thanks in advance....

One more tidbit. It will not connect to the internet unless it is in safe mode with networking. It absolutely will not connect to the internet in regular mode. Also, there are 3 svchost.exe programs running, which when I tried to close made the system do an automatic shutdown. I think this is associated with the graybird virus. I have McAfee Enterprise Edition and it does not even detect either virus....

So that said, I cannot run the PandaScan unless I reboot into safe mode with networking. Is that okay to do? It will not connect to the web in regular mode. I have been installing these programs you mentioned with the help of a usb memory key.

OK I ran ATF cleaner and now ran Edwido and it did not find anything. I restarted in regular mode and ran
Hijack this and below is what I got. I also ran the McAfee update manually and ran it and it found process.exe in the smitfraud file directory but I think I saw where this was normal....

It is definitely missing some files based on the Hijack log. I think I may have deleted something that was infected that was necessary to run IP authentication or something like that. I tried to do an IBM System Restore to two days ago but it won't work. Any ideas or should I save my files to CD and reload the whole OS???

PS - I unchecked network services to see if I could get those files back when the network services re-installed but now it won't load or can find the i386 file, so I think I am getting close to a reload....

Hi moshon. Let's try this.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Now check to see if this file is present or actually missing:'c:\windows\system32\lspcs.dll
If it is actually missing then uninstall CYBERSitter through the Add or Remove Programs applett in the Control Panel.

Reboot normally, start HijackThis and click the Do a system scan and save a log button to perform a scan and create a log file. When the scan is complete, Notepad will open up with the log file in it. While in Notepad, press Ctrl-A to select all text and then Ctrl-C to copy the text to the clipboard.

POST the log in this thread using the Add Reply button. Click in the data-entry window and press Ctrl-V to paste the log into the window. Add any other comments which you believe might be helpful in our analysis. and click the Add Reply button.

I will review your new log when it comes in.

OT, thanks so much for your reply. I did everything you asked. All boxes were checked as you wanted when I went into my computer, so I did not have to change anything. I went to add/delete programs and Cybersitter was not in there to uninstall, so I opened Cybersitter and there was an option to uninstall so I did so. I then restarted normally and ran Hijackthis. Here is the log as you requested. So the only change to the system was the deletion of Cybersitter. I wonder though if I hosed the system by deleting network services and then attempting to reinstall because it was asking me for a CD of XP which unfortunately IBM does not include with my new system. But the weirdest thing of all is after I gave up the other day and let the thing sit in hibernate mode, then opened it back up tonight in normal mode to deinstall cybersitter, the system actually connected to the internet!!! That is weird after all the "stuff" that I did to it....

Hi moshon. Very strange indeed (but then I am no longer surprised by most of the things I see and hear happening on computers lol).

The log looks pretty good. Just 1 leftover item from Webroot SpySweeper (which I don'tsee installed or running anyway).

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)
Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Other than that things look good. How are things running now? Any more problems?

OT - thanks....

I did the repair and am able to connect to the web.

As I mentioned, I have McAfee Enterprise, Edwido, Adware, Spybot.

What are your recommendations for keeping these malwares off the system in the future? Should I purchase any other products or run any of these programs on a particular schedule. Are you confident that Zlob and Graybird are gone?

Hi moshon. There are no signs of anything lurking so you are good to go. Here are a few tips for proteccting your computer:

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • CHECK Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Turn ON System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You already have a good anti-virus, and you should also have a good firewall for blocking unwanted access to and from your computer. These also are free for personal use:It is best to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit Microsoft Windows Update monthly. Microsoft puts out new updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month so be sure to check regularly.
