This is the way i do it. Go to Start, Accessories, System Tools, Character Map. In Character Map click on the down arrow at the side of the font bar and scroll down to Webdings and you will find a tick character there. Copy it and paste it into your Doc. You may need to resize it to suit. Check out various fonts in Character Map as there may be more ticks available.
