Thanks heaps for looking into my problem
I think i might have a series of problems...not sure if they are linked or not


I recieved 2 errors when I opened the directX diagnostic tool

DxDiag Error
Error: Problem getting extra sound info, result code =0x80004005 (generic failure)

and

DxDiag Error
Error: could not get extra directMusic info., result code =0x80040154 (unknown error)

I looked into the problem because i wasnt getting any sound when playing a game

I then noticed that my "sound" and "multumedia" icons were missing from my control panel



I looked at "problem devices" in the microsoft system information tool and it listed:

Next, download install and run Everest Home Edition, which you can download using the link in my signature. Once you have it running, click on REPORT and the Report Wizard should run. When you come to the REPORT PROFILES page of the wizard, make sure you have radio button next to System Summary Only selected. Then click NEXT, you can leave HTML selected and click FINISH. The report will then be generated and a new window will appear. In this new window that appears, click SAVE TO FILE and save the report as REPORT.HTM somewhere on your computer where you will remember its location. Please ATTACH this file to your reply.

I am asking for this information so that I can help you get updated drivers for your sound card.

I found 2 yellow exclamation marks in my device manager:

- microsoft tv/video connection

- creative gameport joystick



I downloaded Everest Home Edition, ran system summary, the report is attatched.

I think I know what the problem is, but I would like one more piece of information first. What is the name of the game that you are trying to play where you get no sound? Also, do you get other sounds that come through your speakers and just don't get sound when playing said game?

The name of the game was 'starcraft'

I started getting some sound at the start of the game, in the menu, but suddenly stopped once the game itself was loaded

I believe your sound card drivers have been corrupted somehow. What I suggest you do is reinstall the drivers for it. You can download the drivers for your sound card HERE. Save it to a location where you will remember, and once it's downloaded, navigate to where you saved it and double-click the SBPCI128Setupus_w9x.exe file to run it. You will probably be told that you need to reboot your computer for the changes to take affect. Do so and once rebooted, try playing the game again.

Please note that you may need your Windows 98SE CD during the installation of the drivers, so please make sure you locate and have on-hand this cd BEFORE running the file you downloaded!

I i installed and ran 'SBPCI128Setupus_w9x.exe', when asked to reboot i did,

before windows started, I got this message:

cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or a window application

the window registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exsits.

If you deleted this file on purpose try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.

If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file

I pressed a key and windows started, I started up the game, again i had sound at the start, but once fully loaded the sound stopped

Please go back into the DEVICE MANAGER and let me know if there are still two items listed with yellow exclamation marks. Also let me know if you at one time ever had any Norton product installed on your computer; like Norton System Works, Norton Antivirus or Norton Utilities.

Yes, I used to have Norton Antivirus, Dont use it anymore, I thought it was uninstalled

Also noticed that i still cant open the 'sound' or 'multimedia' icons in conrol panel
