Infrared Connection

Does anyone have knowledge of connecting using the infrared connection on a wireless phone? Does it take special software? I have recently purchased a wireless phone with infrared connectivity. My laptop also has infrared on it. However, I have been unsuccessful in connecting. The computer recognizes the phone, as it puts a message on the screen "another computer is nearby". Can this connection only be used for file sharing between the phone and the computer, or can it be used to connect to the internet?
