I am having the Dr. Watson problem. I can't do Hijack This because I can't get into any of my files. I can't open my control panel, my hard drive search, any of my drives...nothing. I can't even download any programs to help (ex: AboutBuster) because when I do...I can't get into my computer to use it!!! I'm stuck. I fear that there is no way to fix this problem because I only have access to the Internet and...well, that's it. I can't do anything. Does anybody have any suggestions? I'm afraid I'm going to have to wipe my hard drive clean and lose everything I've accumulated over the last 4 years. There has to be a solution!

hello

You have to save the programs to your desktop to open them.

Please download HijackThis version 1.99.1 from here:
http://www.downloads.../hijackthis.zip
and make sure to unzip it to a permanent folder. Then please run HijackThis, click Scan and Save log, and post the new log here. I would be happy to take a look at it.

Please download PeperFix from here
http://downloads.sub...rg/PeperFix.exe
Save it to the desktop and run it. Click Find and Fix to scan your system for the Peper trojan, and allow PeperFix to remove all infected files. Restart your computer if prompted.

Restart your computer then go along with the following instructions!...

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please download and install these programs - don't run them yet!!

Please download and unzip
About:Buster to a folder. Inside the folder is a readme file that has instructions on the use of the program.
AboutBuster MUST be updated before you use it.
Start AboutBuster, click the update button, check for update, drag the box to the side and hit download updates, close the box . Don't run it yet.

Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

Download and unzip cwsserviceremove to your desktop. use either link below:
http://computercops....ownload&id=3002
http://www.mytechsup...rviceremove.zip

Download CW-Shredder at the link below:
http://cwshredder.ne.../CWShredder.exe

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

For anyone using Windows XP, 'Search' will not automatically show hidden files even if your folder options settings are set to do that. Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here http://www.davehigha...ds/xphidden.zip to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's the fix:

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

2. Reboot into SafeMode. <---MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS!!

3. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\xyskw.dll/sp.html#44768

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\xyskw.dll/sp.html#44768
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [sdkmk32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\sdkmk32.exe
O16 - DPF: {1C955F3B-5B32-4393-A05D-24B4970CD2A1} - http://spystream.bab...cabs/videox.cab

O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\sdkmq.exe (file missing)

4. Delete the following files if present:
If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

C:\WINDOWS\sdkmq.exe << This file
C:\WINDOWS\sdkmk32.exe << This file
C:\WINDOWS\sdkhz32.exe << This file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winrb32.dll << This file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xyskw.dll << This file

5. Run AboutBuster . This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

6. Scan with AdAware and let it remove any bad files found.

7. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

8. Double click on the cwsserviceremove and when asked to merge say yes.

9. Run CW-Shredder - Hit the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

10. Reboot into normal mode.

11. Download the Hoster from here http://members.aol.c...bee/hoster.zip. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

12. Download and run this online virus scan:
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

then reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log to see how we did.

I can't do this. Because it unzips to a folder it won't let me open it. I unzipped it to my desktop...but still no go. There is no way for me to get into the folder.

I unzipped it to my desktop. It shows up on my desktop as a folder. I double click the folder...and nothing. It won't open. My computer won't open anything that looks or is a folder. So I can't get to AboutBuster.

Okay, I did almost everything in Safe Mode. I can now open my folders. Though when I reboot, everything opens up (ex: the Internet and most programs on my desktop). Here is my HijackThis log now. If you see any problems, any help would be wonderful. THANKS!

Hello

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

Reboot your computer into safe mode.

Have hijackthis fix the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2N85L533MR#GJT] C:\WINDOWS\system32\BntA.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [addqi32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\addqi32.exe

O4 - Global Startup: GStartup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT\GMT.exe
O4 - Global Startup: PrecisionTime.lnk = C:\Program Files\PrecisionTime\PrecisionTime.exe
O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\sdkmq.exe (file missing)

Run cwsserviceremove.reg that you saved on your desktop, merge that into the registry.

Restart your computer into normal mode.

Post a new hijackthis log.

Okay, I did it exactly like you said. The only problem I had was that the following wasn't in my Hijack This log when I did it in Safe Mode.

O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\sdkmq.exe (file missing)

But everything else was there and I deleted them. I rebooted in Normal Mode and here is my new Hijack This log. Again, thatnks so much for all your help.

Everything looks great --- your HijackThis log is completely clean. ;)
Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

IE-SPYAD
A tutorial on using IE-SPYAD to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here

Keeping these programs up-to-date and running them regularly can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.o...oducts/firefox/

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.
[OR]
I notice that you do not seem to be running antivirus software. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. AVG makes an excellent free antivirus client; it may be downloaded here. Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. :tazz:
