Hello,

History: I was having problems booting up my PC - I'd get an error "Unable to read disk, please hit control-alt-delete to reboot." I'm running Windows XP. I took the PC in for service where I bought it (Microcenter), they did diagnostics and determined that it wasn't hardware related, but that XP was corrupt. They tried to fix XP but were unsuccessful. While at their service desk, we were able to hook my 160GB harddrive up to one of their machines, and were able to see all of the files that were on the drive.

I had them put in a new harddrive, making the new drive the master and installing a fresh installation of Windows XP on the new 160gb master harddrive. I then had them install the old harddrive as a slave... now my problem:

From "My Computer," When I open the old drive now labelled "D," and go into "Documents and Settings" and then try to open up my user folder where "My Documents" would reside... there's no way to open up my user folder... infact, it's not a folder at all, but rather it's a generic icon with my username.

How can I access my files now that my former master harddrive is now my slave drive?

It's sounds like the directory structure is corrupted on the slave. Let's see if it looks the same in dos.

start > run > cmd
d:
cd "\Documents and Settings\John\My Documents"
dir "your lost directory name here"

if, by some miracle, the images are listed

mkdir c:\filesFromD
copy "your lost directory name here\*.* c:\filesFromD"
dir c:\filesFromD
