I can't get my home PC into Safe Mode by using F8 function key when trying to accomplish SpywareQuake 1st process, although my search XP does not find SpywareQuake. Interesting that when trying to look for the next virus, SpyFalcon, the search XP NEVER ended!
Question, do I really need to go thru all these virus's if I know the only one effecting me is winantiviruspro2006 and how do I delete it?

Hello Don

I would be surprised if you only have one Trojan on your system. Since you appear to know the infection name, please post a fresh HJT log from normal mode. If you don't know how, please read step 5 of CLICK HERE above.

Sorry about last night, as I had an unexpected out of town guest. I did download most all of the reccomended clean-up progams to a CD at work (hi-speed) so that I can load them on my home (dial-up) PC. Hopefully I can launch them, as instructed, from a new folder I'm calling "Clean Drive". Will let you know the outcome either later tonight, but most likely tomorrow Saturday.
PS-I have a Compaq computer, with XP and Earthlink security. Never had any problems until my step daughter tried to access map quest last weekend. Usually run Earthlink security scan/updates each week, but it had been two weeks since last scan.

OK, no problem. Hopefully the HJT log you post will reveal the cause to me.

Better yet, let's hope the clean software/processes do their job and eliminated it.

Here are the results, although SpyBot got ride of the original virus. Note: 2nd rpt. was unable to delete also TROJ_POLYDL.a found by HouseCall. After a 8 hr. day (dial-up) processing.

Hello Don and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have been hijacked by our comrades in Belarus, which normally brings with it the Wareout infection. I can’t see the infection at present, but I think it would be prudent to scan for it just in case. Let’s see what we can do. There is no need for you to do online scans unless I request it. I would be grateful if you could contain yourself to do only what is requested of you.

Are you running Authentium Antivirus, and is it currently up to date?

Please disable Ewido Guard from running as it will hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the orange icon in the taskbar (near the clock) and uncheck Resident Shield. The icon will change to a grey colour.

Please disable Trojan Hunter. Go to TrojanHunter Guard in the lower right corner of your screen. It is a light blue icon with a magnifying glass that can be difficult to see but the handle is red. Right click it and select settings. Uncheck Load at startup and Enabled

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find this service:

Firewall service (FWSvc)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter this item into that field (copy and paste):

FWSvc

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingc.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved.

Run HijackThis. Click "Do a System Scan Only", and place a check next to the following items (if found):

Click FIX CHECKED. Close HijackThis.

Finally, please post the contents of the text file that opened earlier (you can find it at C:\fixwareout\report.txt ), along with a new HijackThis log from normal mode, into this topic.

First....Not sure how to deterrmine if I have Admin. rights, but this shoud be a signal ID PC. Also not sure how to dtermine which SP I currently have and had difficultly with MicroSolf wed site and never did that process yesterday.
2ND....I'm at the HiJackThis operation and when I pasted FWSvc I get "Service 'FWSvc ' was not found in the Registry. Make sure you entered the short name of the service., vbExclamation.
What do I do now? Hope you are there and sorry about our time difference.

That's OK Don, just continue.

BTW, if you go to User Accounts in Control Panel, you will see if you have Administrator's sights.

Looks like I have Admin rights....Thx
Is there an easier way to get to my posting each time, rather than doing a search using topic?
Hear is the latest HijackThis, noting that I found 15 of 16, did not find the last one 023ervice: Firewall service.

FYI...items I couldn't delete yesterday for various reasons, but probably show up on HijackThis anyway:

Finally should I be concern about (avail size) DeFrag results?

Hello again Don

The logs look encouraging.

Is there an easier way to get to my posting each time, rather than doing a search using topic?

At the top right side of the post is a box labelled OPTIONS. Click and choose TRACK THIS TOPIC > IMMEDIATE EMAIL NOTIFICATION.

Are you running Authentium Antivirus, and is it currently up to date?

I would still like to know.

Updating Java and Clearing Cache
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  • It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  • If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  • After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
    Downloaded Applications
    Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
combofix.exe

Please install, and update Ewido anti-spyware
  • Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Please select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
  • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Deselect "Only if threats were found"
  • Close Ewido. Do not run it yet.
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

  • In Safe Mode, load Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be patient.
  • Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (I suggest the Desktop).
  • Please ensure you post that log in your reply.
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ultimate Defender.install] "C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0P6RCLQN\UDefender_Installer[1].exe" continue
Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into normal mode. .

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

Ultimate Defender

Please notify me of any other programmes that you don’t recognise in that list in your next response

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select Delete on Reboot
  • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):
C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0P6RCLQN\UDefender_Installer[1].exe
  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, and under the heading of Applications uncheck Ewido Security Suite log then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When it has finished, it will produce a log. Please post that log in your next reply.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look. (3 logs in total please) How's the PC running now?

Phil,
First of all I just did a little reading on your disease and I thought I had problems with my MS, WOW! Was not even aware of Meniere's until reading your signature sign off. I'm very impressed that you are able to do all this reseach and help non-Geeks like myself while battling that awful disease. :whistling:

I'm assuming that Authentium Antivirus is the brand name for Earthlink "Protection Center" and in that case I'm up to date and the scan summary is 10, the highest. I think my problem is the I didn't run my normal weekly Protection Center scan and then my step daughter used my PC to go to Map Quest and all [bleep] broke loose!

I like working with you on the weekends because we can do more than one thing in a day, whereas now I'm at work and will have to wait until tonight to process your solutions.

How's the PC running now? Just about 100% better, no POP-UP's except "Dial-up Connection", which I don't think I'm suppose to us (and can't fiqure how to disable) when connecting to the internet. Earthlink wants you to use their "Total Access" log-on to take advantage of the internet "Accellerator" for speed. If you know a way to disable that pop-up, that would be a bonus.
