i couldnt install the AVG... i downloaded it and it had an error when installing. This PC is not a guest on the network. Yes I have admin. rights I log on as administrator and the User accounts in the control panel says i have admin. rights. Still trying to get rid of AOL and I had to much useless HP stuff running. I only have an HP 4200 printer now... no scanners. When I try to uninstall this things in Add or Remove Programs it says that the Windows Installer Services is having a problem. The computer is running much better... no more messages when I log on. The screen does flash black for about 2 seconds and then it comes back and the Windows System 32 file opens. I could not find that nsc5.dll file! Its not where it says it should be..... here's teh log.

The HJT log shows just one entry as possibly bad. The entry, however, is incomplete so it is just a remnant of a Trojan and not active. If this PC is not a guest on the network, it must therefore be the Gateway. You simply cannot run a network without antivirus protection; you won't last 30 seconds on the internet.

Since AVG did not work, we must look at two things. Let's try AVAST free edition and/or check the system files for cleanliness.

To check the integrity of the operating system, please run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the programme, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

Hello again

I am not sure what could be causing the black screen flash on boot up, probably something in the Win.ini file. I may have to pass you over to another forum for that if it persists. Your HJT log is looking pretty good with the exception of one entry which appears to be a remnant.

To get to MSCONFIG, click on Start -> Run -> type in MSCONFIG -> click OK > STARTUP > now look for an entry with nothing written by it or something like zbXb. When you find it, remove the checkmark or tick > APPLY > OK > REBOOT.

Did that cure your problem?

Please post a fresh (final) HJT log from normal mode. How's the computer running now?
