Now open exactly one explorer window
Do not open any instances of IE or you might get the wrong results.

you want me to open windows explorer? since you said no instances of internet explorer I'll assume you mean windows explorer, so I'll do just that

yes i followed your directions, and did NOT

receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid."

.

however, when following your steps for the other thing (in console), it doesn't seem to work, here's what I get.

The proper command is procs -l (L)

I think you use a "one" (1)

Can you confirm?

Very good. There is something else I'll need to see.

Please click Start > Run and copy this command into the window:

regedit /e c:\ITtoolbar.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\Explorer"

Then click OK to execute. If it was successfull the file c:\ITtoolbar.txt was created.
Open that file and post its content. Please do not delete that file. We will use it as a backup.

Regards,

Good thinking. That's better.

Let's get rid of that.

Please open Notepad and paste all the text in the code box below into a new file.
The first sign has to be the R of "REGEDIT" There should be no spaces or line feeds before it.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\Explorer]
"ITBarLayout"=-

Save the file as delitbar.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files".
Then please double-click on delitbar.reg, and click Yes to confirm you want to merge the file with the registry.

Then reboot and let me know how the computer is behaving and if the windows show their normal shape again.

I see absolutely no change in behaviour.

and if the windows show their normal shape again.

I don't think you understood, that missing bar (that contains the three buttons that are in every window) only happens when I click the Norton icon in the right-corner of the taskbar.

I probably should've showed this to you earlier. This is what my desktop looks like (sometimes up to 30 seconds) after logging into windows. (pay attention to the taskbar)
taskbar.jpg

i think this is caused by some kind of "lag" my comp is experiencing (like when i said it's like my computer needs to "warm up" or "tune-in"). the computer seems to do nothing for several seconds after i right-click a file.
Also look at this picture, again at the taskbar, the infamous "lag"- i put the cursor over the taskbar, take it off, and look what it looks like just before word loads a blank document:
taskbar.jpg .
can you picture it looking like that 'till the bottom of the screen? it happens when the computer seems to be busy, like when windows is loading, or, when i minimized an IE window earlier (but, after opening the window and minimizing it again, it did not want to repeat the phenomenum)

Do you have an alternative for the Symantec software you are running?

If not, let me know what you have exactly. Version, components etc. and I'll try and set you up with an equivalent that gives you at least the same protection, but should be a lot easier on the computer.

The problems you are experiencing are at least 90% due to an overload on the computers resources.

As far as I can see there are no problems with the files loaded in explorer (besides the number of them).
