First, this is my first post, so forgive me if I've done anything "out of the norm."

I recently discovered a virus on my computer, and when I found the infected files, I deleted them. Well now I realize that was pretty foolish, because I have no sound! The files were something .exe

There isn't a speaker icon in the bottom right corner anymore. And when I go control panel, sounds & audio devices, everything in the volume, audio, and voice tabs are greyed out. The greyed out words read "No audio device," "No playback device," "No recording device," etc.

I have tried a system restore, but it keeps saying no changes have been made to the computer. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi mwaljn...

Sounds like you need to reinstall the sound card drivers. Right click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties". Under the "Hardware" tab, click on the "Device Manager" button. Do you see any yellow ! of ? displayed next to any items in the device list?

Ahh, yes, there is a ! next to "C-Media AC97 Audio Device"

Oh boy, I'm starting to fear the worst. What does this mean, or what do I need to do?

Thanks!

this means that the driver for the sound card is messed.
go to your manufacturers site.
find the driver for the sound and download it.

Right click on the device and choose "Properties". In the Properties window, click on the "Driver" tab. Click on the "Update Driver" button. Have the wizard search your computer for the driver...let me know if one is found and if it resolves the problem.
