If you have automatic updates off, and you do not click on any Microsoft Office programme then yes

Microsoft release updates monthly, then release updates to the updates, usually followed by updates to the updated updates

It is just as easy to run the PC with automatic updates off and check Microsoft update manually and weekly, or as often as you like

You can sign up for notifications

The comprehensive for IT sends update advice as and when it is available

Click start, control panel, security centre, change the way security centre alerts me, remove the tick for automatic updates, click OK / apply

Then you can turn automatic updates off
