[irish_eyes]

Yesterday, my my McAfee 8.0.0 (scan engine 4400, Definitons 4832) alerted on W32/Gael.worm.a. Since I have selected to automatically clean the infected file, that is what was done. I ran a full scan and the Gael/worm did not show up, the system reported no viruses found. I shut it down and went to bed. Today, while I had the computer on, McAfee again alerted on the same thing three times within a few hours.

I ran and copied the HJT logfile. It is posted below. If the McAfee cleaned it and got rid of it, why is it still alerting on it? Is it not gone as I assumed was the task McAfee is set to do?

I am not connected to any other computers or a network. I have the only computer in the house that is connected to the internet.

I ran the name you listed through my search option and it turned up nothing. However, when I read the description of the virus on McAfee, I looked for it, found it in My Computer>Documents and Settings>All Users>Shared Documents folder. It is a benign looking folder labeled setup, and when I inquire about properties it has absolutely no information there. I manually deleted it, but when I checked just now the same file is back. When I explored it, McAfee registered a hit on both the Gael (listed as cleaned and a source of 130.13.99.218[VDSL130-13-99-218) the application is listed as System: Remote. It also hit on a new one that reads: smss.exe C:\Windows\System New Malware Trojan svchost.exe. It also says it was moved to quarantine because the file was unable to be cleaned. Apparently this secone one was detected within the last 10 minutes according to the time stamp on the Virus Scan console.

So something is downloading or reinstalling the trojan.

Please find your hosts file. It should be located at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts
The file has no extension. Rightclick it and choose to Open With ... Notepad

Then add this line.

127.0.0.1 utenti.lycos.it

Save the change and close the file.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

Reboot into safe mode and do a full system scan with McAfee.

Boot back to normal when it is done and let me know which firewall you are using.

O23 - Service: Windows Log - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvcd.exe

Then click Fix checked and

• next
• Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
• Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
• click on "delete an NT service"
• Copy and paste this in: Windows Log
• Click "ok", then reboot into safe mode

After the reboot delete these files:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvcd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system\smss.exe

Then boot back normally.
Let me know how that went and post a new HijackThis log.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, but I am usually wiped out for a couple of days after chemo.

I did everything you said, and McAfee didn't hit on anything during the scan. In answer to your question, I am using the Windows firewall.

If you ever have the time, I would suggest installing another firewall.
There are several free ones available that give you better control.
Zone Alarm Tiny Personal Firewall
