Hello,
I'm at my wits end, get the 'press ok to terminate application' dialog soon after logon.
After that; no desktop icons, right click functionality or taskbar. Basically the shell isn't running.
So I can limp along with cmd, task manager, 3rd part tools & most things can still be got to work.
Obviously tho I want to fix this and wonder if its malware.
Unfortunately jumped in at the deep end and did an xp repair install first which has nuked my restore points.
Various virus/adware scans turn up nothing.
The behaviour is across all accounts & in safe-mode.
Anybody got any ideas (before I'm forced to reformat and install from scratch)?

Hi cso,

Have you tried using sfc?
This step is to see if all the needed system files are present.
To do so use the sfc /scannow command as described here:
http://www.updatexp....cannow-sfc.html

My assumption is that explorer is trying to load a dll that has been removed/replaced.
To start sfc using Taskmanager:
Bring up Taskmanager (CTRL_ALT_DEL)
Select New Task and point to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sfc.exe

Let me know,

Hiya Metallica,
Yes, did the sfc /scannow and /purgecache and /scanonce (which I think does it at boot when I assumed there would be less interference). Also did repair install which I assume does the equivalent and more. And used BartPE to offline replace all DLLs in system32 with those from an identical (spec) machine which doesn't have the problem. No joy.
Beginning to think the answer lies in a knackered registry entry or somesuch and that I'll have to bite the bullet and do a complete clean install.
Cheers.

One trick you can try is to open system.ini and find the entry
Shell=explorer.exe
Change it to Shell=C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe and save the file.
Then reboot and see what happens.

Alternatively. If that line does not exist.
Please run Notepad and paste all the text in the code box below into a new file:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"Shell"="C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

Save the file to the desktop as changeshell.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files".
Then please go to the desktop and double-click on changeshell.reg, and click Yes to merge within the registry.

Hello again!
Made registry change. After login iexplore starts & shows my default homepage (google). Everything else (well not the error dialog about explorer), no desktop icons, no desktop right-click menu, no taskbar etc., is the same and of course explorer, if I do run it manually, still crashes.
Anyone have a suggestion as to how I can zero-in on exactly where the problem is occuring? I've done a depends and replaced the 2 dozen .dlls + explorer.exe with known good ones but still no joy...
Cheers

Do the system logs show anything helpfull?

Did you have any fake warnings before you did the reapir install?

Also, can you try replacing explorer.exe with a renamed copy of iexplore.exe ?

Hello again,

No suspicious messages doing a repair install.

The system event log has a single entry which is just an echo of the error dialog; Information Event ID 26, Description:
"Application popup: Explorer.exe - Application Error : The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000ba). Click on OK to terminate the application. "

Copying (program files\internet explorer\)iexplore.exe onto (windows\)explorer.exe has a similar result to the "Shell="/registry key thing; I can get a process called explorer.exe to run but its just a file manager application window, no shell functionality (desktop icons, taskbar etc.).

Just a curious side note; what is the relationship between explorer.exe and iexplore.exe?

I'm getting evermore determined to solve this riddle; if its some form of malware then its well hidden, otherwise I get the feeling there is like one byte in the registry or a config file somewhere set to the 'wrong' value...

Cheers.

explorer.exe and iexplore.exe are very similar applications that load a lot of the same libraries (.dll's)

I think we have established that the error is somewhere in the actual elements of the shell that is wrong.
That would mean the taskbar, desktop or explorer sidebars.

This is why I asked about the fake spyware warnings. Some of these alter your desktop and/or taskbar.
There is also a known dialer (and probably others) that create a search window in your taskbar.

Can you find desktop.ini and post a copy of the content please?

Hiya,
c:\windows\desktop.ini and c:\windows\system32\desktop.ini are both empty.

OK. Save the part in the code box below into notepad and save it as desktop.ini in the Windows folder

[ExtShellFolderViews]
Default={5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}
{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}={5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}

[{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}]
WebViewTemplate.NT5=file://Folder.htt

[.ShellClassInfo]
ConfirmFileOp=0

Next, please find the file folder.htt and open it in notepad.
Post the content of that file as well.

Ok, did that.
There is no folder.htt in windows or anywhere else.
I've got all that 'hide files' stuff switched off and I double checked with dir/s.
BTW Thanks for trying to help, this is starting to drive me crazy.

Hang on.
I need an English version of that file, but I like to see if this actually works.
So we'll try with my Dutch version first. If it does work it's easy to replace with the correct language.

I'll attach a txt file to this post. rename it to folder.htt and save it in c:\windows\

Then reboot and let me know if you can run the original explorer.exe

Too bad. One attempt down the drain. :whistling:

Let's see what we can find out in the registry.

Run this command:
regedit /e C:\shellextensions.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions"

Doing this successfully will create the file C:\shellextensions.txt
Find it and post the content.
Do not delete the file, since we may need it as a backup.
