my cousin gave me an old computer he had in his garage that i cant start up. origanally the problem was i didnt have any ram on the computer, but i took some off of another computer. now i get to a screen that just says COMPAQ and has a motionless hourglass at the bottom left corner. it only has a 6 gig harddrive and it is probable worthless, but i would like to fix it for personal improvement.

Did you install the OS yourself or are you trying to start it with the previous software? If you have access to an OS disk then I would attempt to install the software from scratch. Of course you need to check the additional specs to see what OS's the system will support. What type of processor, how much RAM, what type of PSU, etc?

No, if he is only getting the hourglass on the Compaq screen something else is wrong. He won't even get a chance to install Windows, as the computer won't get that far.

I think I would try to enter the BIOS and reset it to the defaults and take it from there...
