Hi, matlack :whistling:

Welcome to Geeks to go.

Please go to the Add/Remove Programs option in the Control Panel and Remove ALL previous versions of JAVA. Then, please click here to download the latest version of JAVA 1.5.0.08. and Install the application. If you experience problems with the Auto install, click on Manual Download for the Offline Bundle.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears at reboot

Hi, matlack :whistling:

It should appear as J2SE or JRE Runtime environment. Look for the Coffee cup.

Hi, matlack :whistling:

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):

c:\program files\License_Manager

Run Killbox.exe. Paste the following location into Killbox. Checkmark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click YES and it will reboot.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fmifdan.dll

After the restart test the computer.

Post a fresh Hijackthis log and let me know how is the computer doing.

Hi, matlack :whistling:

Lets take a deper look:

Click here to download WinPFind .
  • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
  • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
  • Dont do anything with it yet!
Reboot into Safe Mode

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
  • Double click WinPFind.exe
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
  • Once the Scan is Complete, restart the computer back in Normal Mode.
  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Place those results in the next reply!
Note: Liveupdate seems to be active updating Norton. In regard to the Winlogon error, is it possible you can post the exact error message?

Windows Installer box says it is preparing to Install

On top of that box another box appears Norton Antivirus 2005 - The box states that Norton Antivirus 2005 does not support the repair feature, please uninstall and reinstall.

The Winlogon.exe failed to logon. Do you wish to send a report to Microsoft. However, the error message did not appear when I restarted the system this time.

Here is the log you requested:

ARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi, matlack :whistling:

There is nothing wrong on these logs.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4E86A50B-A7FF-4cae-B8B7-28A13B6D46F0} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\fmifdan.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: fmifdan - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fmifdan.dll

Now close all windows and browsers, other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close Hijackthis.

Remove Norton throughout the Add/Remove Programs, then click Here and follow the instructions to completely remove the application. Once done, reinstall Norton.

Post a Hijackthis log when done.

Hello JSntgRvr,

Thank you for all of your assistance in this matter. Because the store failed to provide me with the reinstallation disk, and because they no longer have my computer, they are swapping this computer with the problem out for one that is comparable. Therefore, this problem will be resolved by replacement (smile).

As I get the new one up and running, I would appreciate your input as to what anti virus software you would recommend. Hopefully, I will not run into this problem again.

Your suggestions and inut would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Again!

Hi, matlack :whistling:

Stay away from both Norton and Mcafee as they will deplete your resources. There are good overviews about Nod32, although it isn't free.

Freeware:

AVG Free Edition as an Antivirus.
Zone Alarm as a firewall

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

Best wishes!
