In the course of the past few months, I have had problems twice, once with Alfacleaner and once with CoolWebSearch. I was able to stop the aberrant behavior by myself both times but I am not sure that I got all the pieces. I have a few symptoms that bother me and make me think that perhaps I left something on the machine that is still causing a problem.

Chief among these is the inability to run Windows Update. When told to look for updates, the service starts looking but never returns. After several minutes, the IEexplorer window and one SVCHOST process begin to take 100% of the CPU time. Often, I cannot even get the attention of the machine to bring up Task Manager and I have to do a hard reset. The other problem is a relatively infrequent error of some sort in IE that causes the browser window to close.

I have pasted in a HijackThis! log file below. I would very much appreciate it if one of you would take a look at the log and see if you can spot anything that would cause these problems. Thank you very much in advance.

Michael

Hi kdfrawg,

Can you tell me which scanners you have tried to clean out the remains?
I would advise to use at least Spybot S&D and AdAware (both have free versions).

Also check if it isn't your firewall blocking the updates.

Hi!

I have been using the paid version of AdAware SE for a very long time. I also use the Bitdefender malware product that comes as a part of their suite. I am not running any software firewall. I have a one-year-old linksys hardware router / firewall as a part of my wireless network.

The problems with the browser hanging / closing with error started about the time I got the two Trojans, within about two weeks of each other in June. I was able to stop those two trojans from exhibiting any behavior whatsoever by looking at what was recommended in this forum (Geeks-to-Go) to stop these particular Trojans and then taking those actions. Because I am an amateur at this, I 'm sure I probably left some remnants of one or both of these pieces of Malware.

I honestly don't know if Windows Update stopped working at that same time or not. I do not have it set to do automatic updates and mainly just go to the site and do updates when the Microsoft virus problems are big enough to make the news. In late June or early July, I removed Norton Antivirus (which was a chore to do right!) and replaced it with Bitdefender. Shorty after that, I installed Acronis True Image in preparation for installing a new system drive and cloning it from my existing one, something that I have not done yet. Those are the only two major software changes / additions in the last ninety days, when these problems started.

Please let me know what to do next.

Thanks.

Michael

Let's see what we can find out.

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Thank you for your answer, Pieter.

I have done as you asked and have pasted the uninstall list in at the bottom of this email. I should note that one of the things I did right away was uninstall the Bitdefender suite to see if that was what was stopping Windows Update from working. It wasn't and I reinstalled it. I have been trying to deal with the Windows Update support staff on that side of the problem, but they have not been much help. They have found no problems in over a month of emails, one about every three days. Geeks-to-Go does much better. ;o)

The list follows.

Thanks.

Have you been installing the updates through other means?
Your last update was issued about 10 days ago.

Can you find this file:
C:\WINNT\KB921883.log
Open it with notepad and post the content of that file please.

< smile > You know, I had about forgotten that I did that. One long night, after another useless exchange with Microsoft Tech Support, I went looking for the security update files for Windows. I found them on the IT Professional side of microsoft.com. I figured out how to downdload the .iso files for June, July, and August, not knowing what an iso file was. Then I found that out and figured out how to use the files to burn CDs. Then I installed one of the updates off CD. I think this is probably it.

The CD structure and the instructions are pretty confusing, though. I didn't know exactly which version of what patches I should be installing and I wasn't really able to figure it out. There were a lot of options. So, after installing one sort of at random, I stopped doing it, not knowing whether i was making things better or worse. That's what they have Windows Update for, is to sort out what you need and install it. ;o)

Anyway, the contents of the .log file are pasted in below.

Thanks.

Michael

Hmmm. That doesn't count then.
Let's try this first. If it turns out to be the solution, I'd have to hurt myself if we skipped it.

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-

net stop wuauserv

Repeat that procedure for the following lines:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

Then reboot and try going to Windows update again.

Thanks for getting back to me. I was afraid that you were going to say that update didn't count, although I was inordinately proud of myself for a while after I figured out (almost) how to do it. ;o)

All of your commands ran successfully. However, when I went to Windows Update, it behaved in the same unhelpful way. Let me describe that to you more fully, because I have been paying close attention to the problem since it started. Here is what happens:

1. I navigate to the Windows Update site. No other applications are running except for Task Manager, so that I can watch the process.
2. Because the site seems to prefer it, I click on the first option, which is "Express". I have also clicked on "Manual", though, and it does exactly the same thing.
3. The IExplore process starts in task manager, as does a SCVHOST.EXE process owned by the SYSTEM. These two take some varying total of the processor between 30% and 100% for several minutes, probably three or four.
4. Then the processor shows as 100% used. About 85% of that is the SVCHOST.EXE task. Another 12-14% is IExplorer. After that, nothing much changes. The system is taking perhaps 1 or 2% of the 100% (red line vs green line in task manager.) The program never returns.
5. I have to use Task Manager and the "End Now" response to close IExplorer.
6. The SVCHOST.EXE task keeps running after IE exits, now taking up all of the processor by itself. I also have to use Task Manager to stop that task.
7. Sometimes the system is unstable after that. Sometimes I can never get the attention of the machine and I have to do a hard reset. This becomes more likely the longer I let it run. I have let it run for as long as ten minutes. When Windows Update was working, it would always return the list of updates in less than 90 seconds.

I hope that some of this is helpful to you.

Thanks.

You certainly have reason to be proud of yourself, having figured out how to install those updates. :whistling:

I just got my hopes up when I saw those recent updates.

Next step is to see if all the needed system files are present.
To do so use the sfc /scannow command as described here:
http://www.updatexp....cannow-sfc.html

Earlier you mentioned you uninstalled Norton. Since this often results in problems, can you check if you followed this procedure: http://www.geekstogo...are-t43188.html

Let me know,

Thanks for getting back to me. I have run sfc/scannow. It started running (why does everything from Microsoft take over your whole computer and make it hard to even change between windows while running?) and ran for a while. Then it asked for my Windows XP disk, which I dug out and gave it. It spent a lot of time accessing the Windows CD, taking so much processor that it was difficult even to write this note in Notepad while it was running. It took a very long time to check the system files, more than a half an hour. I finally went and ran some errands while I was waiting. I'm back from errands. This puppy takes a long time! ;o) It finally ended without saying anything. I hope that it was not supposed to report back.

When it completed, I rebooted the computer, just for good form. When it came back up, I went to Windows Update and tried it again. No joy. It exhibited exactly the same behavior that I described to you yesterday.

As far as Norton is concerned, that Geeks-To-Go page is exactly where I got my advice. ;o) I had to run one of the Norton tools twice to get satisfactory results. Then I had to go back and uninstall SymUpdate through the control panel tool. Finally, I searched out any of the directories they had left around on the system drive and inspected them for anything which should still be important to the computer. There were some I did not know about, but I erased almost all of the Norton directories anyway. It took a lot longer to take Norton off the computer than it did to put Bitdefender on it. I must have spent several hours removing Norton. I really hope I did it right.

I am going to be gone to the doctor with my wife this afternoon (for about two hours about four hours from now) so if I don't get right back to you during that period, that will be why. I will be at my computer and available until then, though.

Thanks.

Wiping directories after the tools were finished might not have been the smartest thing. :whistling:

Let's see if we can rectify that.
We don't want to bring the files back so we will have to clean out the registry.

Please download the latest version of CCleaner:
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/

Install the program and run it.
Click the Problems icon and click the Scan button.
When it is done let it fix the problems it found.
Please, this is very important, when you will be prompted if you want to backup the registry changes make sure that you choose to make a backup.

Let me know if this helps. It may require a reboot.

Thanks for getting back to me. There is every chance that deleting some of those directories may not have been my smartest move ever, but I am here to guarantee that I have done far stupider things. ;o)

I have downloaded and installed CCCleaner. There was no icon for "Problems" but there was one for "Issues" and I clicked that one. They may have changed the program interface. Then I scanned for issues. I backed up the registry when prompted me and then let it fix all the problems it found.

I then rebooted. It took a very long time to reboot and re-populate the desktop that time, althoigh everything still appears to be there. Then I went back to the Windows Update site. It acted exactly the same as before. Thanks for continuing to help me with this.

I will be leaving in a few minutes to take my wife to the doctor and will be bacl in 2 or 2 1/2 hours.

I had to guess about the translation. Mine is in Dutch. :whistling:

Can you tell me what happens when you use the Windows Update option in the Control Panel?
I'm trying to find out if the problem lies with the updates or with IE.
There are lots of people, including me, who can't use the Windows Update site, without lowering their defenses.

I wasn't giving you a hard time about the wording, honest. I have a very healthy respect for anyone who
learns languages. Personally, I am monolingually challenged. ;o) I have a friend who is Russian by birth,
but whose parents were diplomats. He is a natural learner of languages and the environment he grew up in
gave hime a lot of access. He speaks more than 20 languages fluently, and can hold converstaion
simultaneously in several of them. I have always been jealous of that. Of course, that was during my 25
years in San Francisco. In Lawrence, KS a guy doesn't run across a lot of foreign language speaker.

I'm assuming you mean to run windows update from the "Remove / Install Programs" section of the control panel. That's the only place I know where manual update is in the panel. I had to look in "Help" to find that. I didn't know it was there. I have not run it yet because it looks like it might do a lot of stuff to
the system, which I have to do when it is already broken. If that's the place you mean, and you want me to,
I will do it, though.

By the way, something we did uninstalled my sound device, which is an external Creative Sound Blaster.
Do you think I'll have to start completely over with it? It was a bear to install in the first place.
